The Checky Challenge – How Many Times a Day Do You Check Your Phone?

The estimated reading time for this post is 3 minutes

How many times a day do you check your phone? Do you know? Have you ever wondered?

If you feel as if you’re constantly checking your phone, well then you probably are. But if you’re curious about exactly how many times a day you check your phone, then you should check out this new app.

Checky App Challenge

Checky is a free app that will track how many times a day you check your phone. If you’re wondering how many times you turn on your phone to check email, Facebook, Twitter, weather, stocks, The Wonder of Tech, etc., you now have a way of finding out.

How to Use Checky

The app is simple. You download the app and open it. No setup is required. Then go about your day as usual, checking your phone as you normally would. At the end of the day, go back to the app to see how many times you checked your phone. You can also get a notification at noon the next day telling you how many times you checked your phone the previous day.

The app keeps track of the number of checks each day in a graph so you can check your checking over time. You can see whether the app actually discourages you from checking your phone too often.

Warning: Checky might have the opposite effect. You may end up checking your phone more with the Checky app, just to see how often you’re checking your phone!

Perhaps they should have a setting that doesn’t count you checking your phone if all you’re doing is checking your phone to see how often you check your phone? Hmmm…

Location, Location, Location

In addition to telling you how many times you check your phone, Checky also shows you where you checked your phone on the iPhone version of the app. You can see on a map where and how often you checked your phone.

Tap on the yellow icon in the upper right corner of the home screen on the app to reveal the map which reveals where and how many times you’ve checked your phone today.

Note that location tracking does use battery life. If you find you’re not using this feature, then you can turn off the mapping in:

Settings => Privacy => Location Services => Checky => Allow Location Services => Never

but then the app stops working on the iPhone.

According to the developer, the location data is stored on your device and the app’s developers have no access to it.

Sharing Is Caring

If you’re proud of your Checky stats, you can share them on social media or via email and text message. If you’re not proud, well then you can keep them to yourself!

The Checky Challenge

You may be surprised at how often you’re checking your phone. Before you check on the Checky app for your first full day, make a prediction. Guess how many times a day you check your phone:

10?

50?

100?

500?

Compare your prediction to the actual number. Did you underestimate, overestimate or guess the number exactly?

My Checky Challenge

I decided to take the Checky Challenge so I downloaded the app. I predicted that I check my phone 75 times a day. My actual number for my first full day of using Checky was: 22. Yesterday I checked my phone 25 times.

Checky App Review

I’m not patting myself on the back too hard at being way under my estimate. I still check my iPad and my computer quite a bit when I’m not busy checking my phone. When I’m at my computer, I tend not to use my phone much. I’m still using the Internet, I’m just not using my phone to do it.

Availability

The Checky app is free for:

iPhone/iPad

Android devices

An ad appears at the bottom of the page. So far, the only ad has been for the developer’s other app, Calm.

Your Thoughts

Do you check your phone frequently during the day? How many times do you think you check your phone in a day? Will you take the Checky Challenge? Share your prediction in the Comments section below and then come back to let us know how accurate your prediction was after you give the Checky app a try!

    Hi Carolyn,

I have no idea how many times I check my phone, but my guess is that it’s about 40 times. I’ve been working hard to stop using my phone as often as I have been using it, many times it’s not something I need to check, it’s just that it’s become a habit. I need to download the app and see if I’m actually right, I’m afraid that the number can be a lot higher ๐Ÿ™‚

I will probably try it for a day or two. i have active groups on Whatsapp and Viber, besides all the social media, Issuu and mail. I do peek at mail but read on the comp or tablet. I think my count must be high.
My wife thinks I am not listening to her ๐Ÿ™‚
Must be a lot, must check and see.

Hi Nick, Great point. You don’t have to use this app forever. Make your guess and then use the app to see how many times you check your phone for a week or so. You’ll get the idea. Then you can delete the app and reload it later to keep track and see if you’ve reduced the number of times you’re checking your phone.

    Hey Carolyn,

So does that mean checking for phone messages, text messages, emails or using it for social media? I mean does this apply to really everything? I just ask because I am using my phone more which you’ll love to hear.

So I use the timer on it and that goes off four times a day. Something else I did was install an app to tell me how far I’ve walked. I’ve been walking first thing in the morning for about a mile and a half and then every time I take Kayla out I use it and then Mom and I walk later in the afternoon. So that would be at least 10 times a day but right now that’s all I use it for.

I did get a call last night that I missed and returned it this morning so that would make 11 for today! LOL!!!

I just don’t use it like everyone else does but it does come in handy.

Thanks for sharing this with us and I’m thinking of you girl! Sending love your way.

      Thanks for the love, Adrienne!

Great point, there are some people who might actually need to use their phone more each day! If they’re just getting used to a smartphone, then they may be a bit hesitant to turn it on and check their emails, social media accounts, high scores in games, etc.

Checky counts each time you turn your phone on, which brings up another good point. You could have a count of one if you turned on your phone and then was on it all day!

    Hello Carolyn,
First of all thanks for this awesome share, I haven’t heard about this app, it is really amazing.
Like others also I have no idea how many times I check my phone, but lots of time due to whatsapp.
I will surely install this app.
    Thanks again.

Hi Swapnil, I’m glad you enjoyed learning about this app. Any guesses as to how many times you check your phone each day?

        May be more than 100.

Hi Swapnil, It will be interesting to see how accurate your guess is! Any idea yet?

Interesting app, indeed. Though I doubt it’s usefulness, to be honest. I check my I think way too many times when I’m not busy with something. And I don’t think I’ll want to know exactly how many I do. Just my opinion, though.

BTW, I think I check my phone less than 20 times each day.

Hi Matt, Yes, this is the type of app that you can load on your phone and delete every so often. Just check in with Checky every so often to see how often you’re checking on your phone. If you see that you’re checking it too much, you may want to give it a rest and cut back.

Oh Great information as you have shared.

Generally in the Android era we use the phone lot of time without any work.

Before using the app i have no idea how many times i did that

But after downloading the same app i realised that i have crossed the limit of app. 150 times.

    Great Information shared
