Considering an electric vehicle? Worried you will run out of power before the end of the day before you can re-charge your car’s battery? You want to save money on gas and help save the world at the same time, but you don’t want to be stranded either.
Check out a new free app from BMW in the iTunes App Store that will help you decide whether an electric vehicle will fit with your lifestyle. The BMW EVolve App tracks your driving during the day to see how many miles you drive to determine if you stay within the 100 mile range of most electric vehicles.
Beware that this app doesn’t adjust for factors such as hills, wind, speed and other driving conditions that may affect your use of power. I recommend that if you are close to the 100 mile range, you should wait until the range of electric vehicles improves or buy a hybrid.
Here’s a video showing how the app works:

Note that this video shows an Android phone using the app as well but the app is not in the Android Market yet. I expect that this app will be available for Android phones soon.
Also note that this app does not require you to purchase a BMW.
Happy Earth Day from The Wonder of Tech!

What a great post for Earth Day! We’d love for our next car to by an electric car, but I’m not sure we’ll be able to wait until the BMW is available in our market. But the app looks like a great way to find out if it would work for us or not.

Hi Kathy, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! I’m glad you enjoyed this post. Since the app is free, give it a try to see how far you travel by car in a day. But remember, the purchase of a BMW is not required with this free app! Other electric vehicles might work for you if you can’t wait for the BMW electric vehicle in your market.

I really would like to get a Volt. Unfortunately my current living arrangements mean I have no place to charge it, or any other EV.

Hi Matt, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! I hope charging stations become more widely available for electric vehicles. Rapid charging would be good too.
