When you think of Kindle books, you may think of black text on a white background. But times are changing.
Amazon has introduced Kindle in Motion, books that are more than just words on a screen.
Kindle in Motion books are ebooks in the Kindle format that have an added element to them. These books may have a different colored background, designs on the page, illustrations and even animation. A page may contain artwork, GIFs, video or other surprises for you.
When you read a Kindle in Motion book, you not only wonder what comes next in the plot, you may wonder what special effect comes next in the book.
Where to Read Kindle In Motion Books
Kindle in Motion books can be read anywhere a regular Kindle can be read. But to see the special effects of a Kindle in Motion book, you must read the book using the Kindle iOS or Android app for your phone or tablet, or using a Fire tablet.
Check out => How to Read a Kindle Book Without a Kindle to learn how to read a Kindle book on your phone or tablet.
If you try to read a Kindle in Motion book on your Kindle ereader or on your computer, you’ll only see black text on a white page. No added elements will show. You can still read the entire story without the in Motion effects on a Kindle ereader.
How to Read a Kindle in Motion Book
To read a Kindle in Motion book, download it to the Kindle app on your phone or tablet, or onto your Fire tablet.
When you open the book, you may see the special effects right away on the cover of the book. Try to resist the temptation to skip ahead to see what lies ahead in either the story or the effects.
This video from Pottermore shows some Kindle in Motion effects for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
How to Turn Off the Special Effects of Kindle in Motion Books
These effects are designed to make the book come alive and enhance the story for the readers. But if you find the special effects of Kindle in Motion books distracting, you can turn them off from within the book.
Tap the Text icon Aa, then turn off Show Media and Autoplay Media.
With these settings turned off, the Kindle in Motion book appears to be just like any other Kindle ebook.
If you miss seeing the effects, you can turn them back on at any time.
Which Books Are Kindle in Motion Books
The library of Kindle in Motion books is small but growing. As of this writing, only 28 books are available as Kindle in Motion ebooks. Another one is due to be published in April 2018, with pre-orders available now.
The good news is that some of the Kindle in Motion books are available for free to Amazon Prime members. If you’re a Prime member you can try out this format to see if you enjoy it before you actually spend money buying a Kindle in Motion book.
And if you’re a member of Kindle Unlimited, Amazon’s all-you-can-read subscription service, you can get almost all of the available Kindle in Motion books as part of your subscription. As of this writing, nearly all Kindle in Motion books are included in the Kindle Unlimited service.

This is amazing, Carolyn, and raises a few thoughts for me – 1) it’s an amazing experience offered by this new Kindle in Motion! Children’s books will never be able to compete! 2) this raises the bar for children’s book authors, self-publishers, for sure 3) will it create a whole new industry – the work involved in creating a book like this!
Food for thought, for me anyway as I have a couple of children’s books in the wings!

Hi Lori, Yes, these are very cool effects to have in a book. You’re right, they’re especially amazing for children’s books even though they’re available for adult genres too.
If you’re considering creating one, you should check out the format on your Kindle app. You may get some inspiration for your books!
