Amazon Wants You to Help Decide Which Alexa Products It Sells Next

The estimated reading time for this post is 3 minutes

Amazon wants your help. That’s right, Amazon can’t decide which Alexa products it wants to sell next.

That’s where you can help. Amazon is launching a new Build It program where people like you can help decide which new Alexa products Amazon will launch next.

Amazon Alexa Build It Program

Build It is a bit like Kickstarter or Indigogo, but without the financial risk for consumers. If you like a product and want to buy it, you can pre-order it from Amazon without risk. If a product isn’t launched, you won’t be charged by Amazon.

In fact, you won’t be charged by Amazon until a Build It product is shipped to you.

About Amazon’s Build It Program

Amazon Build It is a new program that allows people to pre-order Alexa products before they’re more than a concept. Using Build It, Amazon can gauge interest in a product before it commits to manufacturing and selling it.

Amazon Build It Nutrition Scale

A Build It product will be offered at Amazon for up to 30 days for people to pre-order at a discounted price. When you view a Build It product listing, you can see the product description, the discounted price, the full price after pre-orders end (if the product reaches its goal), and how close the product is to reaching Amazon’s sales goal.

Build It Amazon Goal Progress

If Amazon’s sales goal is achieved within that 30 days, then the product will be manufactured and sold.

Buyers won’t be charged until a Build It product ships, so there isn’t a financial risk as there is with backing a Kickstarter or Indigogo project.

Amazon explains its Build It program:

We’ll periodically present you with some of our favorite concepts, and you tell us which ones you want to see built by pre-ordering them. If a concept reaches its pre-order goal in 30 days, we’ll begin to build it—and supporters like you will be among the first to get their hands on it. When you pre-order, you will lock in a special price, and you’ll only be charged if and when the product ships. If the pre-order goal is not met, the product will not be built, and you won’t be charged. It’s low risk, high reward, and a whole lot of fun.“

This video from Amazon explains more about Build It:

Amazon’s First Build It Products

Amazon is offering these three Build It products first:

  • Smart Cuckoo Clock — $79.99 ($99.99 after pre-order ends)
  • Smart Nutrition Scale — $34.99 ($44.99 after pre-order ends)
  • Smart Sticky Note Printer — $89.99 ($114.99 after pre-order ends)

Amazon Build It Cuckoo Clock

Update: The Smart Cuckoo Clock and Smart Nutritional Scale did not meet their Day One goals and did not get built.

The Smart Sticky Note Printer’s goal was met and is now available for purchase.

Pre-orders are available until March 19 for these products. The clock and the scale will only be sold by Amazon if they meet their goals by March 19.

The Smart Sticky Note Printer will be produced and sold by Amazon since its goal has already been met. You can still pre-order the Smart Sticky Note Printer at its discounted price until March 19.

What Else You Need to Know about Amazon Build It

If you purchase a product through Build It, you should expect to receive it sometime between June and September 2021, according to Amazon.

If you miss out on pre-ordering a Build It product at the discounted price, you still may be able to order it at full price if its goal is met.

You can cancel a Build It pre-order any time before the product ships.

To view the status of your Built It pre-order or cancel it, go to Your Orders on Amazon, and find the pre-order.

Compatible Alexa devices are required for all three Build It products currently listed. Check the product description closely to see which Alexa products are compatible with a product before you place your order.

Hi Natasha, I’m glad you like this idea of voting on the next Alexa products. It will be interesting to see which products are successful in reaching their pre-order goals.
