If you’re the type of person who prefers the printed page, you may be delighted to learn that Amazon has made printing much easier.
You may like to have a printed shopping list as you head to the store. Or you may want to print coloring pages or worksheets for your children to get them off of the screens. You may find following a printed recipe is easier than following one on a screen. Perhaps you prefer solving printed crossword or Sudoku puzzles more than apps on your screen.
Amazon has now made printing easier with its new feature Print with Alexa. Using your voice, you can connect your Echo devices to your compatible printer, then use your voice to print.
All you need is your voice, an Echo device, and a compatible printer. Oh yeah, and paper, of course…
How Print with Alexa Works
Print with Alexa is just about as easy as it sounds. If you and printers have had mutual hate for each other, Alexa may soon repair your relationship.
With Print with Alexa, you first say, “Alexa, discover my printer” and your Echo device will search your Wi-Fi network for compatible printers. After about a minute or so, Alexa will let you know if it has discovered a compatible printer on your Wi-Fi network.
Note => Print with Alexa can also be set up in the Alexa app. But since it’s so much easier to just say, “Alexa, discover my printer”, you really have no reason to use the Alexa app to set up Print with Alexa.
After you’ve connected your printer to Alexa, you can say one of the Alexa commands to get Alexa to print something on your printer.

Echo and Printer Compatibility
If you’re planning to buy a new printer or Echo device, Amazon has helpful lists of compatible devices. But if you already have a Wi-Fi-connected printer and an Echo device, just ask, “Alexa discover my printer” to see whether they’re compatible with Print with Alexa. You may be pleasantly surprised that they do!
Amazon offers a list of Print with Alexa-compatible printers, which could be helpful if you’re planning to purchase a new printer.
Amazon also has a list of Echo devices that are compatible with Print with Alexa. The Echo devices in my home aren’t listed by Amazon as being compatible with Alexa because they’re older and no longer for sale.
But lo and behold, my Echo devices did in fact connect to my Wi-Fi printer and work with Print with Alexa. So if you’re excited to use Print with Alexa, try your Echo devices to see whether they’re compatible, you may not need to upgrade your Echo device to use this handy Alexa feature.
Smart Reordering
Print with Alexa has another nifty feature: Smart Reordering. If you’ve ever tried to print something, only to discover you’ve run out of ink, you’ll appreciate this handy feature.
With Smart Reordering, Alexa can automatically detect when your printer is running low on ink and automatically place an order for a replacement ink cartridge. No need to scurry to the store when you learn you’re out of ink, only to realize you have no idea what type of ink cartridge you need for your printer.
If you activate Smart Reordering, you’ll get a 10% discount on replacement cartridges from Amazon. Unlike many other Amazon subscription services, Smart Reordering only places the order when you need the replacement cartridge, not on a specific date.
You can also set up Print with Alexa to notify you when your ink cartridges are running low without using Smart Reordering.
How to Set Up Smart Reordering
To set up Smart Reordering, open the Alexa app on your phone. Tap Devices on the right side of the bottom menu. On the next page, tap All Devices.
On the next page, you’ll see a list of your connected Alexa devices. Tap the connected printer.
On the printer page, tap Change next to Supply.
The next page is Device Settings. Tap Reorder Settings. On the next page, you can choose:
- Automatically reorder when supply is low
- Notify me when ink supply is low
- Turn off notifications
