Amazon Launches RxPass: a $5 Generic Prescription Drug Subscription Program for Prime Members

The estimated reading time for this post is 2 minutes

Last week, Amazon launched RxPass, a new benefit for Prime Members that may save you money and help you stay healthy. RxPass is a subscription program that could significantly reduce the cost of prescription drugs for Prime members.

About Amazon’s RxPass

RxPass is a new subscription service for Prime members. With RxPass, you can get all of your eligible generic prescription drugs delivered to your house for $5 per month. If you spend more than $5 a month on generic prescription drugs and you’re already a Prime member, you may want to look into RxPass.

In its announcement, Amazon stated, “With RxPass, Prime members can get as many eligible medications as they need for one flat, low fee of $5 and have them conveniently delivered free to their door. It’s estimated that more than 150 million Americans take one or more of the medications available through the RxPass monthly subscription. RxPass is our latest effort to help patients save time, save money, and stay healthy. It’s available now to customers in most U.S. states.”

This brief video from Amazon introduces RxPass:

Wondering which generic drugs are included with RxPass? You can search for eligible medications on the Amazon RxPass Pharmacy page by the name of the medication or by the condition being treated. Or, you can search for a generic drug on Amazon and look for “included with RxPass” in the product description.

Eligible RxPass medications treat over 80 different conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and anxiety.

To sign up for RxPass, or to learn more about this new Prime benefit, go to the Amazon RxPass page.

What Else You Need to Know About RxPass

Amazon can deliver RxPass medications monthly or every 90 days. You can cancel your RxPass subscription at any time, but if you get a 90-day supply of your medications, you’ll be charged the $5 subscription fee during those 90 days.

RxPass is separate from prescription drug insurance. You don’t need to have prescription drug insurance coverage to subscribe to RxPass. If you do have prescription drug coverage, your insurance company will not be billed by RxPass.

Availability

RxPass is available in the U.S. only for now. Amazon has not indicated whether it will be expanding the service into other countries.

According to Amazon, “Customers who are enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, or any other government health care program will not be able to enroll in RxPass. Additionally, RxPass is not currently available to send medications to California, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.”

You must be an Amazon Prime member to sign up for RxPass. An Amazon Prime membership is currently $139 per year in the U.S. In addition to RxPass, Amazon Prime benefits include Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, unlimited photo storage, free shipping, a 5% discount at Whole Foods, exclusive member deals, and more.

Your Thoughts

Do you like the idea of getting an unlimited amount of generic prescription medications for $5 a month? Would RxPass help save you money on your monthly prescription drug bill? Do you hope that Amazon RxPass becomes available in countries beyond the U.S.?

Hi Ramya, Yes, the cost of medications, even generic ones, can add up. For some who only take one medication, they may even benefit from signing up for RxPass. This new service has the potential to help many people save money, which could be a great thing!
