Last week, Apple announced a wide assortment of new devices, some of which were anticipated, others of which were surprising. Those who are interested in the future direction Apple is taking, as well as those who are interested in updating their devices, will want to know what Apple has ahead for us.
During the announcement, Apple unveiled a new model of iPhone, an update to the iPad Air, a brand new type of Mac computer, a new monitor, and a new way to watch Major League Baseball. If that weren’t enough, Apple also revealed new colors for the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
New iPhone
Apple announced the next version of the iPhone SE, a more affordable iPhone that’s the successor to the previous Phone SE. This new iPhone SE has plenty of upgrades that will make the choice of which phone to get more difficult for many buyers.
Fans of Touch ID and/or the Home button will be pleased by the design of this iPhone SE. The Home button is below the screen and can be used to unlock the phone with Touch ID, pay using Apple Pay, and log into some apps and websites.
This iPhone SE uses the same A15 Bionic chip as is in the iPhone 13, for faster performance and longer battery life than the previous iPhone SE. This iPhone SE also has 5G capabilities for better cellular connections and faster downloads when connected to 5G networks. It also can charge wirelessly.
The front and back of the new iPhone SE are encased in durable Ceramic Shield glass. The phone is drop, dust, and water-resistant and has a 4.7-inch (11.94 cm) Retina HD display.
The 12 MP rear camera has Portrait Mode and can shoot photos and videos in low light. The rear camera can shoot HD video and take 8MP still photos while recording 4K video. Its 7 MP front camera can take Portrait Mode selfies and low-light videos.
The iPhone SE is available for pre-order now and will be in stores on March 18 beginning at $429.
New iPhone 13 Colors
If you want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style, what better way than getting a green iPhone? The iPhone 13 will be coming soon in Green.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will soon be available in Alpine Green.
The thing is… If you want to bring your new green iPhone to a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, you’ll have to wait until 2023. The new Green and Alpine Green iPhones are available on March 18, the day after St. Patrick’s Day. At least you’ll be prepared for 2023!
The iPhone 13 in Green and the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in Alpine Green are available for pre-order now.
iPad Air
The new iPad Air announced last week has enough specs to make it a worthy rival to the iPad Pro. In fact, unless you have serious computing needs, you could easily save money by getting the iPad Air instead of the iPad Pro.
This iPad Air comes with a 10.9 inch (27.60 cm) liquid Retina display with an anti-glare screen. The power button has Touch ID so you can automatically unlock the iPad Air while you turn it on.
Inside the iPad Air is the M1 chip, the same chip that powers the iPad Pro and some MacBook Pro models. This iPad Air is 60% faster than the previous iPad Air while having the same battery life.
The iPad Air has two 12MP cameras, front and back. The front Ultra Wide camera has Center Stage which keeps the subjects of video calls in focus and follows them around as they move.
As with previous iPad Air models, this one has both Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi plus cellular models available. The cellular models come with a 5G antenna for better connections and faster downloads over 5G networks.
This iPad Air comes in five colors:
- Pink
- Purple
- Blue
- Starlight
- Space Gray
Pre-orders for the new iPad Air are available now with sales starting on March 18. Prices begin at $599 for Wi-Fi only and $749 for Wi-Fi plus cellular.
Mac Studio
While the new iPhone SE and iPad Air were anticipated, Apple showed it could indeed keep secrets when it revealed a brand new computer — Mac Studio. This desktop computer is designed for users who need heavy-duty power, and who have the budget to pay for it.
Mac Studio looks like a mega-sized Apple TV at 4 inches (10.16 cm) tall and comes with plenty of ports for peripherals:
- 4 Thunderbolt ports
- 1 HDMI port
- 1 Ethernet port
- 2 USB-A ports
- 2 USB-C ports
- 1 headphone jack
- 1 SDXC card slot
You can run up to five HD displays from the Mac Studio, including a 4K TV.
Purchasers of a Mac Studio can choose between the M1 Max or M1 Ultra chips. The base model Mac Studio has the M1 Max chip, which is also available in the MacBook Pro. The M1 Max chip offers up to a 32-core GPU and 64 GB of memory.
The brand new M1 Ultra chip consists of two M1 Max chips combined in a process Apple calls Ultra Fusion. Mac Studios with the M1 Ultra chip have up to a 64-core GPU and 128 GB of memory. They can support up to 18 streams of 8K video playback and process up to 22 trillion operations per second.
Mac Studio is available for pre-order now, beginning at $1999 for the M1 Max and $3999 for the M1 Ultra Chip. In-store sale of Mac Studio begins March 18.
Studio Display
To complement the Mac Studio, Apple introduced a powerful monitor called Studio Display that’s powered by the A13 Bionic chip. Four ports on the back (one Thunderbolt and three USB-C), let you connect to a variety of devices.
Studio Display has a 27 inch (68.58 cm) 5K Retina display and an optional anti-glare feature called nano-texture glass. The 12MP Ultra Wide camera is equipped with Center Stage for keeping subjects centered and focused during video calls. Six speakers and three microphones help provide high-quality audio input and output.
You can pre-order Studio Display now with sales starting on March 18. Prices begin at $1599.
