The Wonder of Tech welcomes Teddy Cooper who is excited to share with us his impressions of ChatGPT and how it may help change the way you search. Teddy explains how ChatGPT works in simple terms, from how it processes natural language to the technology behind its impressive capabilities.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot designed to help you find information and complete tasks. You can use ChatGPT to get real-time answers using a library of FAQs that provide accurate answers in seconds.

The “GPT” stands for generative pre-trained transformer architecture, which means that it uses a pre-trained language model that lets it respond intelligently to questions in various languages with high precision and accuracy.
It’s designed to be conversational and human-like, making it a natural fit for various uses. For example, ChatGPT can be used as a customer support agent, sales assistant, or digital concierge.
OpenAI developed ChatGPT with powerful language capabilities, such as learning from human feedback and responding naturally to different questions and topics.
How Does ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT is powered by artificial intelligence and is designed to generate a language of a human-like quality through machine learning and reinforcement learning. It is a natural language processing platform that can be used for various purposes, from customer service chatbots to chatbot-enabled games and to asking questions.
You can ask ChatGPT a question as if you were asking a question to a highly intelligent person. Chat GPT will respond with an answer to your question.
This is a big change from how we have used search engines to find out information. Traditionally, we have asked search engines questions and they list websites that may have the answers. ChatGPT will try to respond to your questions with direct answers.
Sample ChatGPT Questions
Ready to see it in action? Let’s try it out!
To test it, I had to create a free account on the OpenAI ChatGPT blog page. To open a free account, I chose TryChatGPT, as shown below:
Then I saw this welcome screen:
After I continued through the signup screen and chose between the free and the paid plus plan, the fun began!
I asked questions using the chat box at the bottom of the ChatGPT chat screen and then waited for it to respond.
Because I could not resist, I asked ChatGPT about itself, and it responded with the following:
Next, I asked ChatGPT what I thought was a semi-challenging question that required some thought: “Why is San Francisco so hilly?”
I was presently surprised by the answer ChatGPT gave:
By supplying such detailed answers, ChatGPT seems to be trained with diverse text data and can generate responses to various questions and prompts. In addition, It uses a self-supervised learning process to generate responses to user questions and to continue to improve its knowledge base.
Exploring the Benefits of ChatGPT
Using ChatGPT, we can interact with artificial intelligence programs more naturally than before. What used to be just a chatbot of artificial intelligence hanging out on the Internet can now take on various forms, from casual conversations to complex tasks.
Because ChatGPT has been trained with vast amounts of information and with supervised learning and reinforcement learning that fine-tune the model, it can understand and respond to text-based questions in various styles and provide answers to questions. The potential of ChatGPT to improve the accuracy and relevance of search results could benefit users.
ChatGPT provides direct answers to users’ questions and queries. It is an accessible technology for users to enjoy the benefits of chat-based artificial intelligence. This technology has become popular recently because it provides friendly answers to common questions in natural language.
It can understand users’ intents and preferences, process data, and make decisions. Additionally, it can perform a wide range of tasks, often better than human chat operators.
Some examples include providing quick answers or search results and writing articles or scripts. When used correctly and with the appropriate moderation, ChatGPT can be an effective informational tool.
In essence, this is a promising technology that will revolutionize how we interact with artificial intelligence programs in the future.
Challenges of Working With ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a significant language model with over 175 billion parameters and is pre-trained, meaning all the legwork to function has already happened before it responds to your question.
However, AI trainers and human feedback must continuously refine the model with supervised and reinforcement learning. Furthermore, depending on the language model used, this feedback may not always be accurate due to limited access to information. There may also be opportunities for inaccuracies or bias, based on the training and refinement of the model.
My Thoughts
The potential of ChatGPT to simplify everyday life for many people is great, but it is still a prototype. By testing it, I noticed that ChatGPT could answer simple questions such as “When were the Olympics?” or “How tall is Mount Everest?” similar to Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant.
However, since it does not use a traditional Internet search, ChatGPT may not yet handle more complex questions as well as a search engine. For example, if you’re doing some online shopping you may ask questions such as “How much does a laptop cost?” or “Where can I buy a dress like that?”
However, it does respond to these questions appropriately, much better than other chatbots, just not in a human-like conversational sense yet.
With that said, ChatGPT can be an intelligent way to automate repetitive tasks and build efficiency in your life. So, if you have not, take it for a test drive! illia,
Thanks for your comment.
I agree! They will continually improve AI chatbots, like the recent release of ChatGpt 4. If they are used correctly, the sky is truly the limit!
