When it comes to headphones, your choice of colors has been only slightly more varied than a Model-T. Headphones haven’t been much of a fashion statement until now.
If you’re tired of your headphones blending in with the crowd, check out Designears by OrigAudio. These headphones let you custom design the headband and ears with images, patterns and/or text. You can choose a design from their gallery or upload your own pictures. If you want to get really creative you can upload a different picture for the headband and each ear.
These could not only be a fun fashion statement, but you can also use a logo for a unique corporate gift or gift for a team.
Designing the earphones is simple. The website is well-designed, walking you through the process of uploading the images and placing them on the headbands or ears.
Here’s a sample design I created for Wonder of Tech Designears:
These headphones remind me of one of my favorite tech accessories, custom covers by M-Edge for your Kindle, iPad and Nook. As with M-Edge, Designears lets you share your design with others by adding it to a public gallery.
In addition to being a fashion statement, Designears also has stereo sound, cushioned ear cups and a noise-cancelling feature. Their single cord is capped with a standard audio plug that fits into audio jacks for MP3 players, smartphones, laptops and tablets.
Check out this fun video showing Designears in action:
I haven’t tried the headphones so I can’t attest to the sound quality, but one of OrigAudio’s other custom audio accessories was named one of the “50 Best Inventions of 2009” by Time Magazine.
Designears are available from OrigAudio for $69.99. If you want to send them as a gift for someone but don’t know what design they would like, OrigAudio offers gift certificates so you can let the recipient create his own earphones.
If you’re looking for a unique accessory to listen in style or are looking for a fun gift for someone, check out Designears.

Wonderful indeed Carolyn!
I love the way you bring up such unique things, especially for all of us who wouldn’t have any idea about what’s really going on in the tech world!
I loved the idea of using designears and more so the ability to create your own logo or image that you want to use within. I think such earphones are a luxury and something you can custom make and use for yourself.
My kids are going to love it, especially the cool trendy ones the kids were wearing in the video. ๐
Thanks for sharing ๐

Hi Harleena, I’m glad you like these as much as I do. I told my daughter about them and she wants to get a pair (though I don’t think she’ll use The Wonder of Tech design that I made!). These headphones are great for teenagers or anyone else who wants to express themselves.
I loved the video too, it’s a cut above the usual videos I see explaining products. The fun tone of the video matches the fun of the product!
Have a great weekend, Harleena!

Very good. I like headphones and good quality buds but I live alone and so can’t use them or I can’t hear the doorbell or phone. I use them for music in bed sometimes. The last time I used my MP3 player I was listening to Mozart while I waited for eye surgery. It worked the anaesthetist said I was too relaxed for a sedative. I wasn’t that relaxed, I was quick when the surgeon marked the wrong eye up!

These sound really fun! Not sure I would spend $70 on headphones for myself, but I can see how they would make a great gift for somebody. Unique idea. Thanks for sharing this.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Carol, I know, you prefer these headphones for $10,000: Sonix. But if you need a spare, Designears may be a good option for you! ๐
Leora Wenger says
I could see my kids enjoying these. But would I pick a design my sons would like or one my daughter would find fun? I can’t see my boys enjoying some bright pink design my daughter chooses. And they are the more likely wearers.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Leora, make sure to check out the discount offered by Jason from OrigAudio in the Comments section. You may want to get more than one pair so your kids don’t have to share.
Jason from OrigAudio says
Carolyn-
Great article. If any of your users want to design their own headphones we’d be happy to offer a discount to your readers. It seems like there’s some interest so please email me at [email protected] if anyone wants a special discount to get these for only $50.00

Hi Jason, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Yes, there is a lot of interest in these fun headphones. Thank you very much for stopping by The Wonder of Tech and offering this generous discount! I’m definitely going to be using it!
Bill Dorman says
And risk messing up this great hair? I think not……………:)
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
You’re right, Bill, you do have great hair, but Designears will only enhance your look. Consider it as a fashion accessory, not an impediment. ๐
Sara says
I have never really thought of headphones being a fashion statement. I do use them at least once a day so I should add them to my list of accessories.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sara, Good point, if you’re going to use headphones, why not get stylish ones?
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment, Sara!
Jens P. Berget says
Hi Carolyn,
They look awesome. This is the first time I’ve heard of them.
I am using Koss PortaPro (and I have been for a while, but they are nothing close to as cool looking), but I’m very satisfied with them. I listen to Spotify all day long ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jens, I’m glad you are happy with your headphones. No need to replace them if they’re working well for you. But if you ever need to replace them, or need a cool gift for your kids, keep Designears in mind.
Jens P. Berget says
I certainly will, designears looks awesome ๐
Andrew says
very interesting post those headphones look really cool i wouldn’t mind a pair for myself, thanks for sharing this post with us.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Andrew, I thought these headphones were pretty cool when I saw them. I love customizing tech and these headphones are as unique as you can get. I’m happy to share great tech when I find it.
Have a great week, Andrew!
Ruth Zive says
These would make a great gift for one of my daughters – she absolutely HATES those ear bud headphones. They fall out of her ears and she finds them uncomfortable. She would definitely customized these with Justin Bieber!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Ruth, I agree with your daughter, I can’t wear the earbuds that come with Apple devices. They just don’t fit my ears. But I don’t think I’ll be getting Justin Bieber Designears, lol!
I’m going to be getting a pair for my daughter too. She’s designing hers now.
Bruce Sallan says
I want a pair with your picture on them, Carolyn!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Thanks, Bruce, but we don’t want to scare the children, do we? ๐
Praveen Rajarao says
Looks cool. I am using the “Beats” headphones, they are just awesome and my smart phone is equipped to identify them when hooked on and provides a completely different music experience. They cost $99 though ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Praveen, The Beats headphones are cool, I can see why you love them. Yes, Designears are half the price with The Wonder of Tech discount and are more of a fashion statement than Beats. But no point in replacing perfectly fine headphones that are working for you, Praveen!
Sonny says
My question is how is someone supposed to compliment you on how nice your headphones look…
…when you’re wearing headphones?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sonny, Excellent question. I love tech questions like this that I can answer easily. If you’re wearing Designears and someone gives you the Big Thumbs Up, :-bd , you know that you are stylin’! B-)
