Summertime beckons, the season for blockbuster movies, beach reads and amusing TV shows. You want to make the most of your Summer by checking out the hottest entertainment but you’re stuck not knowing where to start. GetGlue is a social network to help you discover different types of entertainment and share what you’re enjoying with others.
Think of GetGlue as Foursquare for entertainment. When you’re watching a movie or TV show, reading a book or checking out a new song, check into GetGlue to see how many others have checked in, read their comments, and leave comments of your own. It’s like watching with a group of friends or joining a book club from the comfort of your home.
You sign up for GetGlue with either your email address or your Facebook account from their website or an app on your mobile device. Pick a user name (choose wisely as this can’t be changed) and upload a profile picture or use the one from your Facebook account.
Checking In
GetGlue covers a wide range of entertainment. You can check in for movies, TV shows, sporting events, books, magazines, movies, podcasts, video games, board games, or whatever else might be entertaining you at the moment.
Your check-ins are public by default, meaning the world can see what you’re reading, viewing, etc. If you want to keep your check-ins private, set your preferences to Private so you can control who sees them. If you keep your check-ins private you can still see others’ public check-ins.
Recommendations
A great feature of GetGlue is that it helps you discover people who have similar tastes to yours. Go to the Who To Follow page to get recommendations of people who like the same types of entertainment that you do.
If you connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts you can follow your friends and see their check-ins on GetGlue.
GetGlue also makes recommendations of books, movies, TV shows and other entertainment you might like and tells you why it made the recommendations. These recommendations are a fun and easy way to discover new entertainment tailored to your tastes.
Thinking of seeing Men in Black III but want to know what others think first? Check out GetGlue to see how many people checked in and what they said about the movie. See what your friends and people you follow said about the film to know whether it’s worth seeing.
Rewards
Another fun feature of GetGlue is earning rewards. You can earn stickers by checking in to TV shows, movies and other categories. GetGlue offers Limited Event stickers for special episodes of tv shows and for special events, such as the Super Bowl, opening day of a movie or the premier of a new TV series. You can also earn Season Fan and Super Fan stickers for your favorite TV shows.
You can either content yourself with virtual stickers or request that actual, physical stickers be sent to you in the mail. For free. That’s right, no postage or handling charges at all. The only restriction is that they will only send you a maximum of 20 stickers at a time (the maximum number that can be sent using a First Class stamp).
GetGlue often partners with different entertainment companies to bring fans discounts and prizes. GetGlue and Showtime recently offered free DVD’s to GetGlue fans of Showtime series, such as Dexter, The Borgias and Nurse Jackie.
Trending Topics
Want to see what’s hot right now? Check out Trending Topics which will show you which events, movies, music, etc. have the most check-ins. You can view check-ins for each category and see how many people checked in for each event. Read the comments and see whether what’s hot suits your style.
Apps
GetGlue apps are available free for:
- Android devices at Google Play
- iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch in the iTunes App Store
- Windows Phones in the Windows Marketplace

Hi Carolyn,
This is the first time I’ve heard of GetGlue. Sounds interesting, especially for movies that you are considering seeing. It would be a great source for reviews and recommendations. Interesting new site. I will go and check it out. Thanks for sharing.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Cathy, I think you’ll really like GetGlue. It’s a fun social media site. I use it mostly from the app and it’s fun to check in when I’m watching TV and seeing others comments. GetGlue makes watching live TV much more fun.
I try to check in after I finish watching a movie or reading a book so I don’t see any spoilers!
Harleena Singh says
Sounds interesting Carolyn!
Hadn’t ever heard about GetGlue earlier than today, and I do need to check out the mentioned site and learn more about it.
I think my kids would enjoy more of this than me because of the complete package of entertainment it contains. I don’t think they would have to go anywhere else for keeping themselves entertained. 🙂
Thanks for sharing and telling us about yet another wonderful thing. 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Harleena, Yes, I think kids would love the actual stickers especially. I use it mostly for TV but I have checked in to movies and books too. It’s more fun when the comments are active and when you’re connected with friends.
Sometimes you can get this sort of information on Twitter for TV shows you’re watching live but GetGlue is great because of the lack of clutter of other messages you have to filter.
Adrienne says
I have a few friends that will love this one. They LOVE talking about different TV shows, songs, movies, etc. so I’ll be sharing this post with them Carolyn.
Yet another really cool site!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Adrienne, Yes, if you have friends who are in to TV shows, movies, books, music and want to chat about what’s going on, they will love GetGlue. Thanks for sharing this with them, Adrienne!
Bill Dorman says
Stuck knowing, or not knowing where to start? Inquiring minds who read the Inquirer want to know……….
Sounds pretty cool; I’m hesitant to hook up with anything that shows what I’m doing or where I’m at. People might think I’m goofing off or something.
Thanks for sharing this however and if it does become something I’m interested in, I know where I’ll come to get all the info I need.
Hope you have a fantastic week.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Bill, Thanks for the catch! Well done, my friend.
You can set your check-ins to be private so no one sees what you’re doing but you can still earn the stickers, Bill. And we all know how proudly you would display the stickers!
Mike Maynard says
The concept is similar to Pinterest, which I think is good. I’m not sure if this will be popular or not. It seems the summer is being enjoyed in Britain, Canada and most of the United States. When I talked to China it was freezing last month and they too have had summer arrive suddenly like us. I think we need to make the most of it here! I’ve posted this week’s Neodigital Art blogs. I took a lot of pictures on Sunday walking around Sandwell Valley nature reserve. I’m starting a new topic this week; frugal weight loss! I think it could be popular, everyone is wearing less clothing and showing their bulges! 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, Actually I find Pinterest and GetGlue to be very different. Pinterest is a very visual site where you organize images and videos based on your interests. With GetGlue you check in to what entertainment you’re enjoying to learn what others are enjoying, share your comments and earn virtual and physical stickers.
But you’re right, both Pinterest and GetGlue are fun social networks!
Thallia says
This is the first time I have heard about GetGlue and I am sure a lot of people would want to give this a try too.. Anyway, thanks for the idea here..
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Thallia, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! I’m glad you learned of GetGlue here. You should definitely give it a try. 🙂
Emily says
A Foursquare platform for entertainment? This is simply great!
I’ll make sure to have GetGlue on my Android phone.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Emily, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Yes, with GetGlue you check into entertainment events much as you check into physical locations with Foursquare. Grab the free app for your Android phone and give it a try! 🙂
fred says
First time I heard getglue. Well, its fun huh, its easy to find people and to check something. Its a comple package fun of entertainment. Thanks Carolyn
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Fred, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Get Glue is still fairly new, though they have millions of users already. It’s not as big as Facebook, but it’s very active.
I hope you enjoy it, Fred! :-bd
Ashvini says
Hi Carolyn,
This looks like twitter of movie world . I often go to rotten tomatoes to check out the ratings before I start watching movies on HBO. It would be interesting to check out how cool this is :).
Thanks for sharing this with us .
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Ashvini, You’re exactly right, this is a lot like Twitter or Rotten Tomatoes, except it’s more focused on entertainment so you can follow people whose reviews you agree with. GetGlue will learn your tastes and then suggest other shows, movies, etc. that you might enjoy. GetGlue will also suggest people to follow to help you discover new things as well! B-)
Sylviane Nuccio says
Hey Carolyn,
Very interesting topic. Of course leave it to not have ever heard of GetGlue. That’s why someone like me needs to follow blogs like yours, especially that I’ve got a new client who require exclusively technology topic items (articles).
Even though tech is not my cup of tea I accepted the job because I thought that would help me to get out of the wood work as far as me and tech go 🙂
Thanks for this info, Carolyn and will check that out 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sylvianne, GetGlue is still fairly new so I’m not surprised you haven’t heard of it. But that’s why I write The Wonder of Tech, to let people know about great tech out there!
Very exciting that you have a new client who wants tech topics. Please let me know if I can help you. Perhaps tech will be your cup of tea after you’re finished the project! :-bd
Anton Koekemoer says
Thanks for reviewing the app. Will be sure to check it out personally – looks like a great app to own.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Anton, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Yes, GetGlue is a great app. You can use it online through their website, but I tend to use it almost exclusively as an app. It’s so easy (and fun) to log on from my phone when I’m watching a TV show.
I hope you enjoy GetGlue, Anton!
Carol Lynn says
Interesting! I had signed up for this a while ago and never had any idea why or what it did. Sometimes I get notifications that people have followed me but I couldn’t figure out why. This makes more sense! That’s an interesting twist on checking in and it sounds like it could be a fun way to connect with other obsessive Game of Thrones fans (there, I admitted it). Thanks for shedding a little light because I was never motivated to check it out before now!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Carol Lynn, That’s exactly how I was at first. I signed up at first but didn’t use it for a while. But once I started using it, I really enjoyed it. If you’re a fan of a hot show like Game of Thrones, you’ll get a lot out out of GetGlue, Carol Lynn!
Jens P. Berget says
Hi Carolyn,
GetGlue sounds like the perfect social network for me. I love entertainment and especially watching movies (and TV) and reading books. It’s been a while since I’ve played any video games, but I love that too 🙂
I’m definitively going to take a closer look at this even though I am a member of far too many social networks already 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jens, Wow, it sounds as if you’re going to really enjoy GetGlue. I don’t find that GetGlue takes much time. I tend to check in quickly as I’m watching a TV show or after I see a movie or read a book.
You don’t have to post comments to enjoy GetGlue. Sometimes it’s funny and interesting to read others’ comments though! 🙂
Jens P. Berget says
I joined GetGlue last night, and I must say that I just love it. I am a huge fan of movies and TV-shows (and music) and a social network all about this is perfect for me. I’m not sure how social I’ll be, but I’ll share the things I like and watch, and I’ll learn from my network what’s good and things I might like.
Thank you so much for sharing this Carolyn 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jens, I’m so glad you are loving GetGlue! It sounds like its a good fit for you. You don’t need to actually be social on it to get a lot out of it.
I will look for you over there and connect with you on it. :-bd
Zoe Alexander says
I can see this being a big hit with a younger audience or those who have more spare time available for entertainment. A great idea and certainly a hit for socialising. The link to FB is the key to opening it up for a big share with your friends. Free gifts are also a great way to engage your prospective audience. Thank you Carolyn for sharing this with us.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Zoe, GetGlue really doesn’t take much time at all. You can just take a moment to check in and that’s it. If you want to stick around and read/leave comments, that’s okay too. But I can’t see someone getting sucked into it like Pinterest or Facebook.
You’re right, though, integrating the network with Facebook and giving away real stickers is great marketing! 🙂
