People who look for love often turn to apps such as Tinder. An app developer in Lithuania is making it easier for people to find love, by adopting a dog.
GetPet is a new app from Karolis Vyčius, a Lithuanian dog lover who became concerned about the growing number of stray dogs he was seeing in his home town of Vilnius. So last month he launched GetPet, an app that helps pair app users with dogs who are available for adoption from local shelters.
The app displays photos of dogs and describes their temperament, to help potential new owners find a match. Modeled on the Tinder app, GetPet lets users swipe right for pups they’re interested in and swipe left for those they aren’t.
Unlike Tinder though, the swiping just goes one way. Dogs have no say in swiping, nor in using the app.

Humans can set up dates with pets they’re interested in. If the dates go well, a match can be made and a “happily ever after story” has begun.
Adoptions at local shelters connected to the app have increased, according to a report by AP. Ilona Reklaityte, the founder of the SOS Gyvunai shelter in Vilnius, praised the app for its innovative way of solving the problem of finding homes for abandoned dogs.
In the AP article about GetPet, Reklaityte said, “I really welcome this new app as it gives us more chances to find our pets new owners and a new home, and that means we can then help other dogs still on the streets. We have 140 dogs right now. Sometimes we give away one or two of them every day, but now we receive (many) more calls and people are coming more often.”

Note that the language in the video is Lithuanian. No worries in the unlikely event that you don’t speak Lithuanian, the video is easily understood without knowing what words are being spoken.
Availability of GetPet App
For now, GetPet is only available in Lithuania, in the Lithuanian language, for Android devices. The app currently works for adopting dogs, not any other pets. The good news is that the developer has plans to expand to other languages, localities and pets. No word on whether the app will come to iPhone.
If you’re interested in GetPet, you can check out this free app in the Google Play Store: GetPet for Android devices. The app description is in Lithuanian but here is the app description translated into English via Google Translate:
GetPet is a gadget for puppies from Vilnius animal shelters.
It’s like a puppy for puppies. Get GetPet – Spooky Spiders. If you are fascinated, swipe your finger to the right if not – swipe left and find another puppy’s profile. In the questionnaire you will find not only pictures but also the story of the pet.
Found a favorite dog? Agree on a date – come to the shelter for a chat. Feed, ride through the fields, get to know. They want to stay together.
Did you decide to puppy your family? Take it home. For the first two weeks you will be assisted by a personal GetPet mentor – he will advise you on various issues and help you get to know your new pet. If the preparation period runs smoothly – you will have a new family member!
And all this – free.
GetPet. Friendship begins here.”
Here’s hoping this life-changing app soon expands beyond Lithuania.

Tesla Introduces Dog Mode
Yesterday Tesla announced that its cars will be updated with Dog Mode. When engaged, Dog Mode will allow owners to set an interior temperature for the car, ever with the engine turned off and the doors locks. Pets can enjoy a cooled cabin in the summer and a warm cabin in the winter when their owners park their Teslas leaving the pets inside.
Dog Mode also alerts passersby that the car is in Dog Mode so Good Samaritans don’t worry about pets being locked in parked cars. Unlike the GetPet app, Tesla’s Dog Mode should work for all pets, not just dogs.
This tweet from Tesla shows how Dog Mode works:
