How to Update the Chrome Browser on Your Computer

The estimated reading time for this post is 3 minutes

Q. I’ve been hearing that I should be updating my Internet browser regularly, but I have no idea how to do that. I use Chrome as my browser and want to learn how to keep it updated. I hear that’s a good way to keep my computer secure, so I hope you can do an article on how I can update Chrome.

But I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t think I’ve ever updated it, so I may have trouble doing it. Is it difficult to update Chrome?

Could you do a very simple article explaining how to update Chrome? I’m easily confused about tech stuff.

A. You’re right, keeping your Internet browser up-to-date is very important for computer safety. And Chrome, Google’s Internet browser, frequently releases updates for a variety of reasons. By updating regularly, you can make sure you’re using the latest version of Chrome to avoid potential issues.

How to Update Google Chrome

Don’t worry, updating Chrome on your computer is very easy to do. In fact, there are few tech tasks easier than updating Chrome.

How to Update Google Chrome on Your Browser

The great news is that Chrome updates automatically when you close your browser and re-open it. If you close Chrome regularly, at the end of every day, for example, then Chrome is likely up-to-date on your computer.

But if you leave Chrome open, then you need to close Chrome to download and install the update. Note => be sure to save any work in progress before you close Chrome.

So to update Chrome, all you need to do is close and open it. That’s it. Updating Chrome couldn’t be easier!

How to See Whether a Chrome Update is Available

If you don’t close Chrome often, you should know how to check whether an update is available. Fortunately, Chrome makes it easy to see whether an update is available.

Look at the upper right corner of your screen. If you see a button that says Update, then an update is available for Chrome. You should close Chrome and re-open it to get the update for your computer. Or click the Update button to close and re-open Chrome to get the update.

The Update button is color-coded to show you how long ago the update to Chrome was released.

From Google, the colors of the Update buttons are:

  • Green: An update was released less than 2 days ago.
  • Orange: An update was released about 4 days ago.
  • Red: An update was released at least a week ago.

You can also check to see whether an update to Chrome is available by clicking the three stacked dots More in the upper right corner of the screen. Then click Help => About Google Chrome.

On the next screen, you should see that your version of Chrome is up to date.

About Google Chrome Up to Date

If Chrome isn’t up to date, a Relaunch button will appear. Click the Relaunch button to close Chrome and restart it, updating Chrome in the process.

After you have closed and opened Chrome, go back to About Google Chrome to check that the update was installed successfully and that your computer is running the latest version of Chrome.

Hello Hari, You’re correct. If people close and re-open their browsers regularly, then they will be updating Chrome automatically. This article is designed to help those who don’t realize how they’re updating Chrome and those who rarely close their browsers.
