New Google Earth Tool Lets You Measure Distances and Areas

The estimated reading time for this post is 2 minutes

Google Earth just released a brand new tool that lets you measure the world around you. If you want to know how far your hike, run, walk, jog, bike ride, or other path is, you can now use this easy measuring tool to find out.

You can also use this new Google Earth tool to figure out areas to learn the size of a piece of property, a park, stadium or country.

Now you can measure the exact distance between two points, or three points. Or as many points as you’d like. Or the area of a parcel of land.

Warning: this tool may result in you having fun and perhaps even wasting a bit of time…

You can use Google Earth to calculate distance even when no roads are involved, such as between your home and the South Pole. If you want to find out how close a neighbor’s house is, how long a driveway is, how far away a tree is, or how close a school is, you can use this new tool. You can measure exact distances between multiple points to calculate the length of a jogging path, walk to school, or cross-country race course.

You can also use Google Earth to easily calculate the area of locations around the world. You can find out which is larger: Colorado or Utah? You can find out the size of a neighborhood, swimming pool, playground or amusement park. Teachers can use this tool to help students learn to calculate areas in fun places around the world, without ever leaving the classroom.

Hi Carolyn, why I don’t see any of these in my google map, is this any updated version? Please tell me because, nowadays i’m working in UBER and CAREEM so I really need to make my google map easy.

Hi Azeem, Great question. This tool is only available for Google Earth, not Google Maps yet. We don’t know why Google chose to include this tool only with Google Earth and not with Google Maps but that is why you can’t find it on Google Maps.

I do hope Google brings this tool to Google Maps soon!
