Google Flights Launches Price Guarantee That Automatically Gives Refunds for Price Drops

The estimated reading time for this post is 3 minutes

Google Flights is an essential tool for finding the best prices on flights. And now Google Flights has introduced a new feature that may make the tool even more essential: Price Guarantee.

With the new Google Flight Price Guarantee, you may have more confidence that the price you’re paying for airfare is the lowest price you can pay.

About Google Flights Price Guarantee

You may have spent days, weeks, or months researching flights, hoping to get the best deal on your airfare. You might have signed up for price drop alerts and kept tabs on flight prices to be sure you were paying the lowest price for your flight.

But when you board your flight and nestle into your seat, you end up sitting next to a passenger who brags about the price he paid for his seat. And his price was much less than the price you paid.

Google Flights can help you know when you’re paying the lowest flight for your airfare, based on pricing history. This week, Google introduced its Price Guarantee that will refund you the difference if a guaranteed airfare price drops after you purchase your ticket.

Even better, you don’t have to monitor flight prices. Google Flights will monitor prices after you buy your ticket and refund you the difference automatically if the price drops. You don’t have to request a refund, Google Flight issues the refund and notifies you.

According to Google, “For some flight prices, Google’s algorithms are confident that the price you find is the lowest available before the flight departs. After you book on Google, we’ll monitor the price until the first flight in your itinerary departs. If the price drops, we’ll make up the difference.”

How Google Flights Price Guarantee Works

To use Google Flights Price Guarantee, first search for a flight on Google Flights. When you see the search results, look for the Google Flight Price Guarantee badge:

The price guarantee badge should appear next to the listed price for the flight.

The badge means that Google is confident that the listed price is the best price for that flight. In fact, Google is so confident that they’re willing to guarantee that price won’t drop going forward.

Choose a flight with the Price Guarantee badge. Click Book on Google. Check the Price Guarantee box on the Book on Google page to accept the Terms of Service.

After you purchase a flight with a Google Flights Price Guarantee, Google will continue to monitor the price until the first flight in your itinerary departs. If the price drops, Google Flights will pay you the difference, without you needing to request a refund.

What Else You Need to Know About Google Flights Price Guarantee

Google Flights Price Guarantee may give you peace of mind and perhaps even a refund when you purchase a ticket for your next flight. But there are some things you need to know about the new program.

In its announcement, Google explains, “Price guarantee pays you the difference between the flight price when you book and the lowest ticket price. To get money back, the price difference must be greater than 5 USD. You can receive up to 500 USD back total per calendar year for up to 3 open Price guaranteed bookings at any one time.”

In addition, Google lists the following requirements for its Price Guarantee program:

  • Your country/region must be set to US and your currency must be in USD to see guaranteed flights.
  • Price guarantee only applies to one-way and round-trip flights that depart from the United States.
  • You must use a US billing address and US phone number on the Book on Google page.
  • You must be signed in to your Google Account

You must book your flight through Google Flights to get the Price Guarantee and you must have a Google Pay account to receive a refund.

Further information is available on Google’s Price Guarantee Support Page.

Google has not yet indicated whether this program will be expanded outside the U.S. But even if you aren’t eligible for the Price Guarantee, you may still want to look for the badge that probably indicates the lowest price for that flight.

I found this article very informative and helpful. I didn’t know that Google Flights had a price guarantee program that could save me money on my flights. I like how Google monitors the price until the first flight in my itinerary departs and pays me back the difference if the price drops. I think this is a great feature that gives me peace of mind when booking flights. I will definitely try it out next time I travel. Thank you for sharing this tip!

Hi Amin, Yes, Google just announced its flight price guarantee program last week. This really sounds like an excellent way to know that you’re getting the best price on your airfare. Even if you don’t meet the criteria to get a refund, you can gain confidence that the price probably won’t drop in the future.

If you do meet the criteria, you can rest easy knowing that if you’re owed a refund, you’ll get it without having to monitor the prices or apply for the refund. Wouldn’t it be great if other companies adopted this program!
