On Tuesday Google launched a new search tool called Google for Jobs to help both job hunters and employers. If you are looking for a job, or want to fill a job, you may want to check out Google’s latest offering.
Many available jobs go unfilled, with employers unable to find qualified candidates. According to Google’s announcement, “46 percent of U.S. employers face talent shortages and have issues filling open positions with the right candidate.” Google wants to help those companies find the right people for all of those jobs.
But job seekers may not know where to search to find the job listings they’re looking for. It can be frustrating to have to check many job listing sites constantly in search of a job that’s a good fit.
Google for Jobs hopes to solve that problem by providing comprehensive search results when people search Google for job listings.
How Google for Jobs Works
Now, when you search Google for a job, using terms such as “job near me”, Google will recognize this as a job search and show you listings that match your search terms.
You can focus your search by adding filters, such as location. For example, you can specify how long of a commute from home you are willing to have.
Even if you don’t specify your maximum commute time, Google for Jobs shows how long it would take you to commute to the job from your home, in many of the listing.
Google also has filters for whether you want to work full or part-time, the date the job was posted, categories, titles and more. With some employers you can also see ratings and reviews.
Google for Jobs has listings from many different sources. Your results could show job listings directly from employers and from job listing sites including:
- Monster
- WayUp
- DirectEmployer
- CareerBuilder
- Glassdoor
This video shows how the new job search tool works:
Alerts
Now that you know this tool exists, and others may be using it, you probably want to find the listings when they are posted.
Google for Jobs helps you do that with alerts. You can set an alert to get an email when a job fitting your search criteria is posted. That way you don’t have to keep searching constantly or worry about missing out on that perfect job posting.
Employers
Google is also making it easier for employers to find candidates for their job postings. It is providing guidance to companies to make their job listing easily discoverable in searches.
If you’re an employer with open positions to fill, check out the Google Search Job Postings page for advice on how to help candidates find your postings more easily.
Availability
Google for Jobs is currently US-only and Google has yet not announced plans to expand it to other countries. You can use Google for Jobs on both computers and mobile devices.
Your Thoughts
What do you think of Google for Jobs? Do you think it would be a handy tool to find a new job? Would you set up alerts to get notices of new job listings?
