Nothing like getting free Dropbox space to make your day a bit brighter. No matter how much Dropbox space you’ve earned, you can always use a bit more free space. By taking a few minutes of your time, you can get a whole 1 GB of free Dropbox space.
Here’s how…
What You’ll Need
1. A Dropbox account. (See Dropbox: The Cloud + Local in HarmonyΒ to learn more about Dropbox)
2. A Gmail account.
3. An iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
4. The Mailbox app.
5. The Dropbox app.
6. A hammer.
Just kidding about the hammer…
How to Get the Free Space
1. Download the free Mailbox appΒ and free Dropbox app onto your iDevice.
2. Log into your Gmail account on the Mailbox app (Mailbox only supports Gmail for now) and into your Dropbox account on the Dropbox app.
3. Open the Mailbox app and press the three stacked bars icon in the upper left corner, revealing the dashboard in the left column. Press Settings => Dropbox => Add Dropbox Account.
You’re done, other than reveling in the extra 1 GB you have of free storage in your Dropbox account.
You can now delete the Mailbox app, but you may want to give it a whirl. You could end up liking Mailbox and keeping it on your iPhone.
You can attach Dropbox files to your emails from within the Mailbox app so you may find it very handy, especially now that you have that extra 1 GB of space.
If you were already using Mailbox and had previously linked your Dropbox account, unlink your Dropbox account (press Edit in Settings and delete the account) and then link it again to get the 1 GB of extra space.

Hi Carolyn,
I finally got Skydrive to work. It was as simple as putting the icon for it on my taskbar! I can just drop files in the Skydrive folder now and they’re uploaded to the server. I can also share my photos with students in China. They aren’t blocked from Skydrive like Facebook.
My blog post today is about local history being Bank Holiday.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, Yes, Skydrive is a great service too but I prefer Dropbox because it’s available on so many different platforms. Sounds as if you’re making great use of Skydrive, Mike!
Greg McMullen says
This is great! Thanks for the heads up. Although, to authorize Dropbox to Mailbox you don’t necessarily need to have Dropbox installed!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Greg, I’m so glad you found this to be useful. Thanks for letting us know that you don’t need to have the Dropbox app installed. Enjoy your extra Dropbox space!
Maddy says
Nice sharing Carolyn, I am using iPhone 4 jailbroken on iOS 6.1.2 via evasi0n jailbreak. Please tell me that is this awesome app available for my device too? And also can I have it in Cydia app store?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Maddy, My iPhone is not jailbroken so I can’t test this for you. I did some research and found that people with jailbroken phones have had mixed results using the Mailbox app: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1561801
Hey, it’s free so you can give it a try.
Maddy says
Thanks a lot Carolyn! I think I can’t use this app currently and its not possible to remove jailbreak from my iPhone, so I would try this app after getting my new factory unlocked iPhone 5 soon. π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Great, Maddy. That’s an excellent solution!
Adrienne says
Thanks Carolyn for sharing this because I’m just now starting to use Dropbox like you suggested previously with my iPhone. Might as well get a little extra space while I can right!
You’re so awesome, always sharing these cool apps and how we can get more space with some services. You’re definitely my Tech Queen.
Have a great week.

Dropbox and pinterest are two places where I need to spend more time understanding what they can do for my me and for my blog. I recently uploaded a huge 64 MB PDF file (all of my old blog posts) into slideshare, then scribd — with positive results. Still so much to learn. I’m bookmarking this post so I can have a Dropbox project blogging session.
Your blog is packed with good info! I’ll be hanging around picking up good tips π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Cheryl, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Dropbox and Pinterest are two of my favorite services. You’ll find quite a few articles about both of these at The Wonder of Tech. In fact, I’ve written about both of these within the past week!
You’re right, it’s challenging starting a blog and by using tech tools, you can make the job easier. Good luck with it!
Johan Bengtsson says
Thanks for the good tip Carolyn, always good to get more space π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
So true, Johan! More space is always a good thing on Dropbox.

Hi Carolyn.
It’s too bad I don’t have an iPhone but I will definitely share this. The folks will really appreciate the step by step instructions you shared.
Have a great new week. π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Corina, Thanks so much for sharing this. I hope your friends are helped by this and get their free Dropbox space.
Pramod says
This is amazing !
If the upcoming budget Iphone doesn’t have much storage space , then users can make use of this tutorial/trick to get additional 1GB free dropbox storage. Thanks for sharing this information with us Carolyn.
-Pramod
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Pramod, Great point. We don’t know how much space will be available on the new iPhone due out soon. A 128 GB iPhone is rumored, but even with that much space, why not grab an extra free GB?
iRewardChart says
I am going to do this … I already have 6GB in my Dropbox and been warned multiple times about nearing the limit. Thank you, thank you thank you!
Yet to get onto the Mailbox bandwagon, but I know my friends who have it, they don’t use anything else. They all love it.
I will certainly give it a try.
And Dropbox …. I have added few years to my life because of it.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi iRewardChart, I’m so glad you’re going to grab your extra GB of space, iRewardChart. You’re right, Dropbox can reduce a lot of stress in life by backing up your data and keeping it accessible wherever you are connected to the Internet. Getting more storage space can reduce your stress even more!
Thomas says
Haha, Carolyn.
I don’t have any Apple devices, but I do have a hammer π I love Dropbox and I love getting free space too. At the moment I have 58 GB of free space on DropBox, but a lot of it is time limited space earned when I bought my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Thomas, Yes, I hope that Dropbox brings the Mailbox app to Android and extends the offer to that platform. Hang on to your hammer and your hope! π
Raj says
What happens if I removed my Gmail Account from Mailbox app. Do they take the 1 GB free space away ?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Raj, No, the space will not be taken away. Gmail is currently the only email service that Mailbox works with so you may as well just delete the app rather than removing Gmail from the app. Mailbox is a 4 1/2 star app in the iTunes App Store so you may want to try it out. You just may like the app! :-bd
Raj says
Thanks Carolyn for sharing the tip. Will try it now !!!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Great, Raj. Enjoy your extra space!
Jitendra Rai says
An awesome share, I was having a real hard time to get the free space in the Drop Box, thanks for helping me.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jitendra, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Yes, it can be challenging to acquire free Dropbox space. Many ways give you MB of space instead of an entire GB. I also encourage you to check out 8 Easy Ways to Get Free Dropbox Space for more ideas on how to get free Dropbox space for your account.
Jeevan Jacob John says
I was wondering when you were going to use the hammer π
I do have a Dropbox account, but I don’t use it much. I use Tresorit for all my file backup/storage needs. They had an offer early – and I got 50 GB of space for free π Thanks to my online friends. They still do offer 5 GB worth of free space. But, I still don’t use it much. I store all my data on my laptop (I have 450 GB Memory; lot of space to store everything I need).
Anyways, thank you for the share, Carolyn π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jeevan, Yes, I find it difficult to find a use for hammers in the world of tech. I will keep trying though. π
It sounds as if your storage space is covered with the amount of space on your laptop but just be sure that your data is backed up. One of the advantages of cloud storage services such as Dropbox is that your data is backed up.
Jeevan Jacob John says
π
Indeed. I have stored my important files on Tresorit. So, if something happens to my laptop, it’s all good π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Excellent, Jeevan. That’s great news! :-bd
Aviet says
I wonder how I was not aware of this trick until now. I am a regular Dropbox user and 1 GB free space would surely mean a lot to me. Until now I would send referrals and in this way I would earn 500MB space per link. Will try this today.
Thanks for sharing this post.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Aviet, Yes, adding Dropbox space 500 MB at a time can give you a lot of space, but this trick gives you a whole GB of space. So helpful!
Enjoy all of the extra space, Aviet. π
Susan Neal says
Hi Carolyn,
I haven’t tried Dropbox yet – I’ve just started using Google Drive, which is my first foray into the slightly scary world of cloud storage (apart from Carbonite, which I use to back up all my data). It’s great to know that you can get additional capacity for Dropbox this way – I’ll definitely bookmark this for future reference and share it with others who may be interested. Cheers π
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sue, Yes, Google Drive is a very handy cloud storage service. I prefer Dropbox because so many other apps and websites sync with Dropbox.
Thanks so much for sharing this with others, Sue!
Tom Jamieson says
Too bad I don’t have any apple devices, otherwise I would certainly take advantage of this, since I already use Dropbox with my measly 4GB of storage. I had 7GB, but 3 of it was time limited from when I bought my HTC device. I have accounts with Box, Skydrive, JustCloud, ADrive, Copy, and Google Drive as well in order to have a lot of free cloud storage. Have a great day!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Tom, Wow, you have a lot of cloud storage! How do you remember where you keep your files? I agree, it is difficult to get free Dropbox space which is why this offer is particularly generous.
I suggest you visit 8 Easy Ways to Get Free Dropbox Space to discover other ways to boost your space on Dropbox.
I hope that Mailbox comes to Android soon and that this offer is still open then!
Mahendra says
Ya its useful tips for get more and extra space, I have 4 gmail account but i never use dropbox, Now i Thinks very useful , I will use in future. Thanks for Complete guide on drop box
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mahendra, Yes, the more space you have on Dropbox the more useful it can be! Even if you don’t need the space now, it may come in handy later.
Jeo says
Hey Carolyn, you are right about the need for space, one can never have enough of it. You truly made my day, I am going to download the mailbox app right away and will claim my share of the free space. Thanks for sharing the extra space.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hey Jeo, I’m so glad this was helpful to you. Yes, having extra Dropbox space is truly a beautiful thing! π
