Great news! While I was away on vacation, The Wonder of Tech became a finalist in Philadelphia’s Most Valuable Blogger Award Contest! I was delighted not only to learn the news when I returned from my trip, but also to see the amazing support I have received from The Wonder of Tech readers. Thank you to everyone who has voted already.
The Wonder of Tech has been nominated in the Everything Else category, which has about 50 other blogs nominated (remind me next time to write a Local Affairs blog, much less competition!). So I need as many votes as I can possibly get in order to have a chance at winning the title.
If you believe that The Wonder of Tech is truly Philadelphia’s Most Valuable Blog, please click on the link below:

This reminds me of when I voted everyday to help a friend win a modelling competition. I had to log into the site, select my friend and log in again. It wasn’t easy, the site was in Dutch!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, Wow, you are a great friend! Luckily, voting for this award only involves one click on the site. The site is in English too, but it’s American English. ๐
Thanks so much for your votes!
Nanette Levin says
Great idea on the hyperlink. Made voting so much easier today :-).
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Nanette, Yes, I improved the link, no scrolling necessary! I will be including the link in all Wonder of Tech blog posts between now and September 9 to make it as easy for readers to vote as possible.
Thanks so much, Nanette, for your continued support! ๐

Mike Maynard says
I voted… I went looking for a stainless steel microwave today and my friend came along. I stopped to look at the smart phones briefly. I didn’t buy anything, my friend spent ยฃ150 on a smart phone! I really need a microwave… ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, yes, there are those who feel the need for a microwave more than a smartphone. Those are probably the normal people. I, as a polygadgetist, would find it much more difficult to live without my iPhone than my microwave. Hmmm…you just gave me an idea for a new Wonder of Tech poll!
Thanks so much for all of your votes, Mike! Greatly appreciated. ๐
Mike Maynard says
I missed this comment earlier, but I had just got out of bed! I need a microwave! I cook all the time because I’m a celiac and dislike most gluten free food. I started cooking extra in the evening and then put it in the microwave next day for lunch; it makes for efficient use of the oven and saves me time.
I wrote two blogs yesterday, one for today that was published at 9am this morning and one for tomorrow – whoops; that was also published at 9am this morning! I got the date wrong!
I have good news! I embedded a photo in an email to the organiser of the photo contest to impress her. The ‘rules’ are now guidelines and as a patient at the hospital and a member of the trust that runs it; I am now eligible to enter the contest. I dreamt my work would be exhibited in a place with high ceilings! You don’t get much higher than there; I took a photo from upstairs over the balcony and it gave me vertigo!
I shall send in photos! It’s the last day for entries and everything is a little messed up; so I stand a good chance with few entries. ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, Best of luck with your contest! Can we vote online for you? I am so happy your work is being displayed in a prominent place so many others can appreciate the beauty of your work. And what a perfect venue for your artistry! You will brighten up the days of so many patients, visitors and staff. Which picture did you enter? Was it one you had posted on your blog?
On another topic, in the US we have toaster ovens. They are very small ovens, not much bigger than a breadbox. They are great for heating smaller things, though not nearly as quickly as a microwave. Toaster ovens aren’t new tech, but I was never able to find one in the UK. If you ever come across a toaster oven, you should consider getting one to save on power. It pays to be frugal! ๐
I will stop by today to check out your blogs. I always learn from your great posts that entertain as well!
Mike Maynard says
I entered the fairyland pictures from the woods, I renamed them ‘enchanted’ and a picture of the hospital itself.
I saw one of those little ovens when I was looking for a microwave, but our electricity is 3 times the price of gas… I put the gas oven on one a gas and tend to microwave at lunchtime.
f you get an email from Twitter saying you have a direct tweet, check the link is to Twitter, there is a fake site with a similar name. I’m not too used to Twitter and so fell for it. I changed my password immediately after.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
I was hoping you entered the fairly land photos. I thought those would be perfect.
Thanks for the Twitter tip! I almost fell for one earlier this month. A friend on Twitter sent me a Direct Message asking me about a link I had posted. When I clicked on the link, it asked me to log into Twitter. I started to, then remembered I was already logged into Twitter so I stopped. Sure enough, it was spam.
I was thinking that the odds of my winning the contest are about 50 to 1, just like your winning horse. I’m so glad you’re voting for me in the contest! Thanks again.
Mike Maynard says
Hi Carolyn,
I’m going to vote again. That risky stock I mentioned in my blog has gone up 8% this morning and it’s not lunchtime yet! I must get in quicker! ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, You might try taking the long term view of the risky stock. That’s great that it increased 8% in one morning. But such a volatile stock stock could go down 20% in the afternoon. Best to watch it for a bit before jumping in too deep.
Thanks a lot for all of your votes, Mike! Nine more days to go! ๐
Mike Maynard says
Yes, Carolyn, I can’t invest for at least another 2 weeks and I have been following the shares for months! That particular one is above my target price now so it would have to drop again before I invest. I am annoyed because my bank won’t pay the money into the account I use, only transfer between accounts. Strangely enough shares in that bank is one I’m considering because they have a new CEO who will hopefully sort out such silliness and return them to the sort of profit they had a few years ago. That would be serious money! I am cautious but we have to take a calculated risk. My horoscope says I’m going to be lucky for a while. I have 4 winner on the horses last night when I was bored and I had one at 50 to 1 last weekend; so who knows?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, You know I was thinking about your wonderful win on the 50 to 1 horse when you talked about investing in risky stocks. Sometimes it’s worth betting on a long shot.
Good luck in your bets and your investments. I hope they all give you good payouts!
Stan Faryna says
Check-in for vote no. 8 or 9 – I forgot the count!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Stan, Thanks for voting and for checking in! I truly appreciate all of the votes on my behalf! ๐
Stan Faryna says
Big hug to you, Carolyn! Yet another check-in on the vote! Is there somewhere where your standing in the contest is listed?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Stan, Big hugs to you too! Thank you so much for voting. I so wish they would post the standings, but they haven’t yet. I have written to them twice with no reply on other matters (I wanted to correct the title of my blog, but perhaps people won’t be confused by “wonder of tech” vs. “The Wonder of Tech”), so I don’t think it makes sense to write them again. I’m hoping they are too busy counting my votes to reply!
I hope your day is awesome, Stan. Thanks again! ๐
Mike Maynard says
Mmm, it says I have already voted today. 9.15 here so not the time zone, difference? I’ll try again later…
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, I believe the voting is a 24 hour cycle. So don’t give up! Just wait a little while and try again.
Thank you very much for your support! ๐
Mike Maynard says
It wouldn’t let me vote yesterday, but I have voted this morning. If it’s a 24 hours cycle, better to vote early – it’s 8:35! I tried out a PhotoShop program last night, interesting but not intuitive. It asked me to install the Flash driver and it’s already installed; I had just played Farmville! I never did get to see the video explaining it all, I’ll try later. I have it on 30 day trial, but I can get a 20% discount. I’m not an Adobe fan really; all their stuff make my CPU get hot.
Mike Maynard says
I have voted today and I did use a smart phone yesterday, the virtual keyboard is slow but no as bad as I thought. I send a message to myself using Window Live. That was a Samsung Galaxy something, uses Android. It would be useful when I’m out but I don’t go out that much. My young friend used his to talk to me while he was walking his dog! I’m going to check out a new art gallery one of the days now I know I can park at the rear; it had just closed yesterday but I got some photographs of the exterior and the waterfront.
AstroGremlin says
I just found this and would have voted for you. ๐ Wouda, coulda, shoulda — the three saddest words in the English language. But your DoFollow CommentLuv site is great! Wish I were more of a tech gadget freak.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi AstroGremlin, Thank you for your kind words. I was deeply touched by how the blogging community and other Wonder of Tech readers rallied to vote in this contest.
No need to be a tech gadget freak to enjoy this blog! I write for every day people who aren’t into tech but feel they want to catch up to developments in the world of personal technology. I try very hard to stay away from Geek Speak or tech terms and use plain English so everyone can understand The Wonder of Tech!
