The Wonder of Tech is pleased to welcome Kwanga Akura as a guest author. Kwanga explains how you can make the most of IFTTT (If This Then That) on your phone. These tips and tricks can help automate tasks to make your life easier.
Today’s mobile devices are magnificent, they are faster, smarter and a lot more efficient as compared to earlier models. As become more advanced, developers have devised ways to make the experience much more fun and engaging, with lots of different apps hitting the market each day. One of these apps that takes mobile devices as well as their automation to a whole new level is IFTTT.
IFTTT, meaning “if this then that,” is a productivity tool that allows you to use “applets” that trigger certain events. The applets cause events to take place when certain conditions are met, as in if this then that.
Using these applets is pretty simple and fun, and can help make your life a lot easier. You can create your own applets or use ones others have created.
Here are some amazing applets that could definitely make your life easier:
For example, you could use an applet to notify you when NASA releases information about some new discovery. Bloggers could connect their WordPress sites to update social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter with a link post to the latest blog post. The possibilities are limitless.

To enjoy these handy applets you have to get some ideas about how to use IFTTT. So what are the best ways to use IFTTT to make your phone act smarter than it already is?
Use IFTTT to Automatically Manage Your Tasks
One great way to make your phone smarter and more efficient to manage your schedules and activities on the IFTTT app. You could carry out a variety of tasks using the Todoist applet ranging from managing calendar events, creating an applet to tell you to wear light clothing if forecast for the next day involves hot weather or remind yourself to read a certain book. The possibilities are limitless. This allows your mobile device to stay on top of things and guide your activity throughout the day. Feel free to experiment with other services too (like Beeminder).
Keep Up-to-date with News and Trends
With over 29 news services on its app, IFTTT has made it easy to automate news tasks on your phone. IFTTT allows your phone to be smarter by updating you with latest news from some of the most prestigious news agencies from all around the world, on topics such as science, government, business, sports, world news and more.
For example, you can run an applet that tells your Android phone to automatically set the NASA picture of the day as your wallpaper or notify you each time an astronaut enters space. Get an alert every time the President of the United States signs a bill into law.
These applets literally allow your phone to know when and how to tell you about the latest news in your chosen niche of interest.

Use IFTTT to Automate Your Social Media Accounts

Social media applets allow your phone to automatically post some tweets or Facebook posts when certain conditions occur, without you having to take the time to post. By connecting IFTTT with services like Facebook, Twitter as well as Instagram, you can use lots of applets, allowing your phone to act automatically when certain conditions are met.
For example, you can automatically tweet news from ESPN about your favorite sports team, save photos you’re tagged in on Facebook to Google Photos, or save your Instagram photos to a Pinterest board.
IFTTT Can Work Seamlessly with Google
Google services and products literally contain the smartest systems out there, so automating some of its features indeed gives you the best of both worlds. Check out IFTTT applets for Google to find applets that work with Google to make your life easier. For example, you can connect IFTTT to Google Assistant to manage tasks from your phone. Making your phone seamlessly integrated with Google features is now a lot easier.
Manage Your Power Settings and Preferences
Tell your phone what to do so it manages its power without need for your input. Do you want it to automatically turn off Wi-Fi to conserve battery? There’s an applet for Android phones to do that. Do you want it to notify you via email when power is low? IFTTT can be your phone’s automated power manager tool.
Do you turn off Wi-Fi when you’re away from home to save power? There’s an applet that will remind you to turn Wi-Fi back on when you return home.
Personalize Your Phone with IFTTT
Another great way to make your phone act smart with the IFTTT app is creating and running applets that allow the phone to automatically update and manage certain personalized features. These may range from tasks like playing a particular song when someone calls to others like updating your wallpaper with the picture of the day from a variety of services.
You can use an applet that will turn a ringtone up to 100% volume if you get a call from a specific caller.
Control Your Home Lighting
Today using the IFTTT app, you can connect to and control your home lighting with just the click of a button. Some really smart tasks that can be executed by your phone using this applets include automatically turning on the lights when you get home and even blinking your home lights when your favorite team starts a game or when you’re mentioned on Twitter!
These mind-boggling possibilities with the applets allow for many forms of automation via your mobile device, making it a true hub for smart automation and self-sufficiency.

Hi Carolyn,
I started to use IFTTT to post my Instagram photos on Twitter. I love it for that. Otherwise the images do not show and who would look while they are on Twitter right?
I also have to remind me to put on sunscreen when the sun/temp is a certain level. That’s pretty cool too.
I haven’t used too many others but after reading your piece I love the ones for turning on and off lights at home. Pretty cool indeed!
Reminders are great too.
Thanks for letting us know all the possibilities with IFTTT.

Hi Kwanga,
I signed up at IFTTT long back in 2011 or 2012 to automate by Twitter and Facebook page for blogger. At that time IFTTT was a newbie.
As social media has impacts a business’ online presence I use IFTTT to sync all social media channels.
In few years, IFTTT has completely transformed into an amazing tool. I use when a paid App is free on app store. And I love this Applet the most.
Which is yours favorite?
Kwanga Akura says
Hi Pratyaksh!
It’s nice to see you are already familiar with this awesome app. Your applet seems cool and I can’t wait to try it out :-). My favourite applet is pretty simple and straight forward, it updates my screen saver with Nasa’s picture of the day. Really simple but helps me appreciate that there is beauty and a world much larger than ourselves. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope you do stick around and enjoy the other articles on offer.

Hi Kwanga,
By name itself this applet sounds lovely, unfortunately, this is not supported on iOS 🙁
But anyways, IFTTT always interests me with new and amazing applets.
Thanks
Kwanga Akura says
Hi Pratyaksh! I do believe IFTTT is supported on iOS. If it isn’t compatible with your phone, it could be one of two reasons, your iOS version might be too old or you are trying to get an old version of iOT. Please visit the IFTTT website for information about the latest compatible version. The application is made available on both iOS and Android. Thanks for reading Pratyaksh, please let me know if you have any other issues. 🙂
Pratyaksh Somani says
Hi Kwanga,
IFTTT is supported in iOS but not all applets are supported. iOS supports very limited applets 🙁
Android supports the maximum of applets.
Kwanga Akura says
Hi Pratyaksh!
I understand your plight. I’m sure the IFTTT app will soon expand on the iOS platform. But for now you might just have to manage the little applets available. I do hope you still enjoy it. Good luck my friend!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Pratyaksh, You and Kwanga are correct, iOS restricts app permissions for security purposes so some applets on IFTTT that work on Android won’t work on iOS. For example, iOS does not let apps turn Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on or off.
These restrictions are for security purposes, but they do affect the functionality of apps such as IFTTT.
Suraj Padmasali says
I use the app Trigger to automate all kinds of things. Much easier to use.
But after reading this post, I think, I should give a try to IFTTT.
Pratyaksh somani says
Hi Suraj,
Yeah you should!
IFTTT is just too cool and easy to trigger automatic posts on TWitter, Facebook, pocket, Instapaper and lots more directly from Blogger/Wordpress.
IFTTT saves hell lot of time for me.
Kwanga Akura says
Hi Suraj,
Pratyaksh is right, the app is really incredible to use and I sense can only get better. This is a great time to try it out. I hope you enjoy it 🙂
