Toys R Us must think the iPad is a toy because you can now buy an iPad 2 at Toys R Us… maybe. Toys R Us just started selling the iPad 2 yesterday at 225 out of its 840 stores in the US. If you are one of the lucky ones whose local Toys R Us is selling the device, don’t rush over there yet. Supplies are limited and sell outs are common so make sure to check out this link to see whether your store has any in stock: iPads at Toys R Us.
If you have been unlucky in your search for an iPad at Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Apple, AT&T and Verizon, then you may want to check out Toys R Us to see if you have better luck there.
I will warn you, however, if you take your kids with you when you buy your iPad at Toys R Us, you will have a difficult, if not impossible time, convincing your kids that the iPad is for you, not them. So I suggest sneaking out without your kids and putting the iPad in a generic bag when you return home with your new purchase. Unless, of course, you are buying the iPad for your kids.

What is so great about the iPad2? I have played around with the first iPad when it was debuted at the Apple store. With the STEEP price, I’m still not convinced I would need or enjoy one?
I currently own a 13-inch screen, 3-lb. very powerful laptop with a mobile modem, so connectivity is never a problem. If you don’t mind trying to “convince” me why an iPad (or more notably the iPad2) is a good purchase (given that I have a very portable computer), I’d love to explore the possible merits of getting one.
Thank you!!

Hi Melanie, I don’t mind trying to convince you at all, but it’s difficult to truly appreciate one without owning one. I know that seems strange, but it’s really the apps that make the iPad so amazing. And the iPad in the Apple Store probably didn’t have many apps on it that appeal to you.
To me apps are an easier way of interacting with a computer than a desktop browser, with some exceptions. For example, if I want to look up a movie time, I will grab my iPad or iPhone instead of going to my computer because that’s easier and quicker. Gaming is a blast on the iPad, the graphics are amazing and the choice of quality games at low prices is huge (Electronic Arts is having a sale on its iPad and iPhone games in the App Store today, check it out!).
The instant “On” is a great feature of the iPad too. If I want to check something using a computer, I just grab my iPad and click it on. No waiting for it to boot.
The battery lasts a really long time. I only have to recharge it after several days of heavy use.
The iPad is a great entertainment device with lots of movies and tv shows available through apps or through iTunes. If you have children, they will never be bored with an iPad around.
The iPad is functional, it can be your alarm clock; currency, temperature, weight, and volume converter; address book; calendar; word processor; star map; GPS; video editor, camera and video camera (if you get the iPad 2); music composition device; eReader; newspaper and magazine reader; floor plan designer; records keeper; etc. Yes, a laptop can perform many of these functions, but not as handily as an iPad can with the right apps.
If you want further convincing, ask anyone who owns an iPad. The only complaint I have ever heard is that they need more than one for their family because everyone wants to use it.
In sum, tech should be fun and useful. The iPad does a great job at both!
