You can turn on Do Not Disturb when you don’t want to be bothered, such as in an important meeting, during a concert or sporting event, at a library or place of worship, or during a meal. Or maybe you want to use Do Not Disturb when you’re in a place of peace, when you want to relax but not miss out on an important call.
Scheduling Do Not Disturb to turn on every night and turn off every morning can be an important setting to ensure you get a good night’s rest without worrying that you’ll miss an emergency call.
But having Do Not Disturb turned on when you don’t need it can cause problems. Big problems. Your phone may not alert you to important notifications, calls and text messages when you need it to.

Turning off Do Not Disturb can be just as important as turning it on. You can rely on your memory to turn off Do Not Disturb when you don’t need it any more, but that may not be your best option.
About Do Not Disturb Until You Leave a Location
Beginning with iOS 12, Do Not Disturb offers a new option — you can now set Do Not Disturb to turn off automatically when you leave a location. If your need to limit interruptions is based on where you are, this setting can be a handy one.
By setting a location-based Do Not Disturb, you don’t have to remember to turn off Do Not Disturb later and you don’t have to guess how long you’ll need to use Do Not Disturb.
Note that the location must be your current location, you can’t set Do Not Disturb to turn off based on a location where you’ll be in the future.
How to Set Do Not Disturb Until You Leave a Location
Using Do Not Disturb until you leave a location is quick and easy, if you know how. The feature is a bit hidden so you may not discover it if you don’t know it’s there.
To use Do Not Disturb until you leave a location, you must first turn on Location Services. Go to Settings => Privacy => Location Services => On.
Turning on Do Not Disturb until you leave a location takes just a few seconds.
Open Control Center. For iPhone X, XS and XS Plus, swipe from the top right corner of your screen to open Control Center. For earlier iPhones, swipe from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center.
Press and hold the crescent moon icon.
A menu will appear showing options for Do Not Disturb. Tap Until I l leave this location. Under that option the place where you are will be shown.
Do Not Disturb will be turned off when you leave your current location.
Apple Watch Do Not Disturb Until I Leave This Location
If you have an Apple Watch you can easily and quickly turn on Do Not Disturb Until I Leave This Location.
From the home screen on your Watch, swipe from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center. Tap the crescent moon icon for Do Not Disturb. The Watch will show you options for using Do Not Disturb:
- On
- On for 1 hour
- On until this evening
- On until I leave
On until I leave will show where you are below that option.
Tap On until I leave to enable location-based Do Not Disturb.

The problem can be when you turn on Do Not Disturb and forget to turn it off. This new setting can help you never have to worry about forgetting to turn Do Not Disturb off after you leave a location.
I hope you enjoy using Do Not Disturb, Joe.

Hi Chris, Yes, this feature is extremely handy but well hidden. Many people don’t know it’s there. But this setting can avoid the difficult situation of accidentally leaving Do Not Disturb turned on when you don’t want it to be.

I have been using iPhone since iPhone 3G was launched. I have seen the best and worse of features Apple introduced. I used to claim that I know about every feature iPhone has in iOS 12. But I’ll admit, this particular feature in this post was missed by me. Thanks for the post.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jignesh, Yes, this is a very useful setting for Do Not Disturb, but a bit hidden. I hope you’re able to make good use of it now that you know about it, Jignesh.

Hi Carolyn,
This is such a lovely post. I must admit that I didn’t had much idea regarding the difference between airplane mode and DND. I am glad I have landed on this post.
Thanks for sharing, have a good day.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sajid, Yes, it is important to know the difference. There may be times when you want to turn on airplane mode to disconnect totally and other times when you want to use Do Not Disturb to let important calls through. But it’s also important to turn off Do Not Disturb when you don’t need it any more. This new setting lets you turn off Do Not Disturb automatically, instead of depending on your memory.

Maybe it’s a good idea to simply refrain from using the Internet?)
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Dan, That’s one approach, though it may be difficult to do in this day and age. You could give it a try and see how long you could stay away…
