Chrome extensions are like smart phone apps: handy shortcuts to make your life easier. But like apps, you don’t want to overload yourself with too many. The key is discovering the best ones for you!
One of the best reasons to use Google’s Chrome browser is the wide variety of extensions that empower your Internet experience, all of which are free. But with thousands of extensions available, finding the right ones for you can be a challenge.
This infographic shows the 18 most popular Chrome extensions, all of which are rated four to five stars by their users. If a Chrome extension is one of the most popular, chances are that it serves a useful purpose and gets the job done well.
[Update: Unfortunately, this infographic is no longer available]
Here are the links in the Chrome Web Store to the most popular Chrome extensions listed in the Infographic above:
- AdBlock
- Adblock Plus
- Avast Online Security
- Avira Browser Safety
- Avast Safe Price
- Quick start
- Adobe Acrobat – Create PDF
- Hangouts
- Hola Better Internet
- Google Mail Checker
- Pin It Button
- Evernote Web Clipper
- Google Translate
- Gmail Offline
- LastPass: Free Password Manager
- IE Tab
- FVD Downloader
Note that MySearchDial is not currently available in the Chrome Web Store (in case you were wondering why the title of this article only promises 17 most popular Chrome extensions when the infographic shows you 18).
Extensions can slow up your browser significantly so make sure your page loading times aren’t longer when you use these extensions. Even though they are the most popular ones, these extensions may not be a good fit for you if they make using the Internet sluggish. Try loading one extension at a time to see the effect on your Internet browsing, instead of loading a bunch at once.
My Favorite Chrome Extensions
I listed my favorite Chrome extensions in: 15 Fantastic Chrome Extensions to Make Your Life Easier. That article explains how to get Chrome extensions at the Chrome Web Store.
Some of the extensions I listed in that article are also in the list of most popular extensions above:
- AdBlock
- AdBlock Plus
- Evernote Web Clipper
- Google Translate
Since that article I’ve found some new favorite Chrome extensions you may want to check out:
- Pin It Button (see link above)
- RiteTag
- Too Many Tabs for Chrome
- PicMonkey Extension
- Weather Bug
- Sidekick by HubSpot

Hi Carolyn,
That was a lovely infographic saying it all 🙂
Yes, I’ve used some of these Chrome extensions you mentioned, but also removed them after a while because they were making my browser very slow and I didn’t need them all that much.
What I’ve done now is added certain extensions on Firefox (which I don’t use all that much), and some onto Chrome, so whenever the need be, I open that browser and get my work done, so there isn’t much load on either of the browsers.
I do remember your favorite extensions as I read them all in the earlier posts, and some common ones we both have I think are the Pin it button, Google Translate, and Sidekick (which I still have to start using!)
Thanks for sharing these with us, and welcome back! Hope you had a lovely trip too 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Harleena, I’m so glad you remember that article. Yes, I shared my favorite Chrome extensions in that article, but I found it very interesting to see which ones were the most popular.
I’m always on the lookout for helpful extensions so this list is very useful. Like you, I try not to bog down my browser with too many extensions though.
What a brilliant idea to split up your extensions in different browsers. You could have shopping extensions in one browser and work extensions in another one. Love that idea!
Thanks so much for welcoming me back from my trip, Harleena, and for your enlightening comments here and on my other articles while I was away.
Rahul Biswal says

You have comprised some of the great chrome extesions. As Chrome is my favorite web browser, I will surely give all extension a try. I specially like the Adblock Plus.

Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Rahul, Yes, AdBlock Plus will spoil you. When you use a browser that doesn’t have that extension on it, you realize it immediately!
I hope you enjoy trying out some of these new extensions, Rahul.
Dennis Seymour says
I actually do not use too many chrome extensions as it can only make loading of pages slower. But, I always find it handy to have the Google Translate, AdBlock and SEOquake. Anyway, your list of 17 popular Chrome extensions is awesome. Thanks for sharing this with us Carolyn.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Dennis, Great point, having too many extensions can slow down pages loading. Be sure to disable or remove any you aren’t using.

Hi Carolyn,
It’s been a while, but I’m back again. I’ve been working on some big projects and didn’t find the time to be online as much as I used to.
I’m using Google Chrome and Safari, but I don’t have many extensions installed. The only four I’m currently using are Evernote Web Clipper, 1Password, Toggl, and Todoist. They are all great, and I can’t see how I’d be working online without any of them.

Adrienne says
Hey Carolyn,
The only two from this list I use are Google Hangouts and LastPass. All the others I don’t use but Pocket is one of my favorite so it should definitely be on the list.
I try not to have a lot because in the past I’ve had issues with having too many on my browser but I try to keep them at a minimum. The ones I don’t use that much I think I should get rid of so this is a great reminder, thank you my dear.
Welcome home!
~Adrienne
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Adrienne, Thank you. I’m still catching up from when I was away, believe it or not! Great point, you should check your extensions every so often to see whether you’re still using them. If you’re not then feel free to delete them. If you’re unsure, disable it for a week and then if you don’t miss it, get rid of it. You can always add back any you miss!

Hello Carolyn,
One of my favorite extension is SearchO Extension – it is a cool little extension that allows you switch websites for searching your query and the best part is that if you already have something related to your search in your bookmarks, then it will highlight it too. Thanks for the list, its been a long time since i rechecked my extensions and i think i should do it now 🙂
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Sri, Thanks for that suggestion, the extension seems very helpful. I searched for it in the Chrome Web Store but couldn’t find it. Do you have a link to help us find it?

I would like to suggest another great extension:
It is called Video Deck for YouTube
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/video-deck-for-youtube/mpoakikepagdiphlmfaeifpojdmbnegj
With it you will never miss any video that is uploaded by YouTube channel that you are subscribed too. It has many customisation features that are simply better then on YouTube.
You get addicted after using it for few times.

Craig says
Hi Carolyn – First time visitor to your site.
I’m a Chrome convert. Don’t laugh, but I used to be an IE slappy. Loved everything MicroSoft until I started doing some development and realized how much MS was going against all the browsing standards.
Anyway, Chrome is my everyday browser now, and I’m not looking back.
There are some interesting extensions in your infographic, a lot that I have not heard of previously. I’ll have to check into some of the security ones.
My favorite extension so far is Keeper. I love the ability that it’s able to autofill my ID / PW for any site I visit. Definitely a time saver, especially if you have unique passwords for all your sites.
Thanks for the great information. BTW – great site.
Craig

Nisha Pandey says
Hi Carolyn,
An excellent post. All the extensions given here are awesome and helpful. I’m for sure going to add quite a few such as AdBlock, Gmail offline, Pin it button.
While these add ons can be really useful, they can significantly hamper the speed. Still the utility is awesome.
Thanks for the great post, Have a great day!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Nisha, Thanks, I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. Sometimes it’s helpful to see which tools are the most popular. After all, if those extensions are well-liked then you can be sure they’re worthwhile.
I hope you find some new favorites, Nisha!
