Netflix Introduces New, Cheaper “Basic with Ads” Tier

The estimated reading time for this post is 2 minutes

Update: As of November 3, 2022, Netflix is now offering this new, cheaper Basic with Ads tier. Read below to find out how this tier works.

If you’re looking to save money, enjoy Netflix, and don’t mind watching a few ads, you should check out the news from Netflix.

Netflix New Basic with Ads

Last week, Netflix introduced its new “Basic with Ads” tier that offers most of its content at a lower price. Netflix first announced its intention to offer an ad-supported tier six months ago. Now we know how the new lower-priced tier will work as well as when and where Netflix will launch it.

About the Netflix Basic with Ads Tier

Netflix will soon offer a less expensive way to watch its content: the Basic with Ads tier for $6.99 per month. The catch (of course there’s a catch) is that subscribers to the new tier will see ads before and during the shows. According to Netflix, subscribers to the Basic with Ads tier will see about four to five minutes of advertising per hour.

At launch, the ads will be 15 or 30 seconds in length, according to Netflix.

Other Differences

In addition to showing ads, the Basic with Ads tier has other differences from the higher-priced Netflix tiers. The Basic with Ads tier does not allow you to download shows to your device to watch them offline.

To watch a Netflix show as a Basic with Ads subscriber, you must be connected to the Internet and stream the show.

Another difference is that some shows on Netflix won’t be available to Basic with Ads subscribers. Greg Peters, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer of Netflix explained in the announcement, “a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on.”

Basic with Ads New Tier Netflix

So, perhaps in the future, Netflix will be able to make its entire catalog available in the Basic with Ads tier. At least we know that Netflix has that as a goal.

Video quality for the Basic with Ads tier will be restricted to a maximum of 720p/HD. This video quality maximum is the same as with the Basic tier. So, if you are a Netflix Basic tier subscriber and thinking of switching to Basic with Ads, you’ll see the same video quality as you’re seeing now.

Availability of the Basic with Ads Tier

The Basic with Ads tier will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S.  The new tier will launch on November 3 at 9 am PT in the U.S. and at 4 pm GMT in the U.K.

The price for Basic with Ads will be $6.99 per month in the U.S. In the U.K., the price will be £4.99 per month for the lower-priced tier, called “Basic with Adverts.”

Your Thoughts

Are you interested in subscribing to a Basic with Ads tier on Netflix? Would you rather avoid seeing ads and pay more for a Netflix subscription? Would you miss being able to download Netflix shows to watch offline?
