How to Organize a Pinterest Board into Sections in a Few Easy Steps!

The estimated reading time for this post is 5 minutes

If you’ve been enjoying pinning your favorite images and websites to your Pinterest boards, you’ll enjoy it even more when your boards are organized into sections. With sections, Pinterest boards can be divided into different topics so you and your followers can more easily find relevant pins.

Pinterest Board Sections

About Sections for Pinterest Boards

Pinterest lets you divide boards into sections so your pins can be clustered according to topics. With sections, you can organize your Pinterest boards to get inspiration more easily and tidy up your boards.

If you think of your Pinterest boards as folders into which you save your favorite pinned images and websites, then think of sections as subfolders for your pins.

Sections appear at the top of a board so you and your followers can see them first when you open the board.

Example of Pinterest Sections

Creating sections for your board is easy and takes just a few steps. By organizing your boards with sections, you may be able to save time in the future by finding relevant pins more easily.

You can organize your group boards, secret boards, and regular boards into sections. Once a Pinterest board has been organized into sections, you can move existing pins into those sections.

When you, or a member of a group board, pins to a Pinterest board with sections, you’ll see options to pin to a section of the board, or to the board in general.

You can delete sections to help clean up your board. Note though that when you delete a section from a board, you delete all the pins in that section.

Ideas for Pinterest Board Sections

Pinterest board sections can help make a board better organized for you and your followers. For example, if you have a Paint Colors board, you could create sections based on colors: blue, yellow, beige, gray, greige, green, orange, etc. Or you could create sections based on what you might be painting: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, exterior, shutters, chairs, craft projects, etc.

If you have a board for recipes, you could divide it into sections so that you could find recipes more easily. You could create folders for breakfast, pasta, meats, vegetables, cookies, breads, soup, etc.

If you have a board for places you’d like to visit, you could divide it into countries, continents, destinations, or activities. Create sections for romantic getaways, favorite beaches, hiking destinations, ski resorts, or mountains to climb.

How to Organize Your Pinterest Board into Sections

Organizing a Pinterest board into sections takes just a few minutes, and may save you much more time than that in the future as you try to find relevant pins. You can create sections using the Pinterest website and the Pinterest app.

Using the Pinterest Website

Here’s how to create a section for a Pinterest board using the Pinterest website:

1 — Open the Pinterest board (note that Pinterest boards are now found under Saved in your Profile).

2 — Click the plus sign + at the bottom of the screen

3 — Click Section

4 — Name the section, then click Add

Now that you’ve created a section, you need to add pins to it.

5 — Click Organize at the top of the board

6 — Click the pins you’d like to add to the section

7 — Click the Move arrow at the bottom of the screen to move the selected pins

8 — Choose the section you’d like to add the pins to, then click Save.

Your board will show the new section at the top. Below the section will be the number of pins you’ve added to that section. If you see a zero under the section even though you added pins, refresh the page and the pins should appear.

Repeat these steps to add more sections.

Creating Sections Using the Pinterest App

Here’s how to create a section for a Pinterest board using the Pinterest app:

1 — Open the Pinterest board (note that Pinterest boards are now found under Saved in your Profile).

2 — Tap the plus sign + on the left side of the screen

3 — Choose Section

6 — Tap Done when you’ve finished selecting pins to add to the section.

Moving Pins into Sections of Pinterest Boards

After you’ve created sections for a Pinterest board and organized your pins, you may find pins remaining on the board that you want to move into a section. Or you may change your mind about which section where you’d like a pin to be.

Moving a pin into a section is easy. For the Pinterest website, click the Edit icon (it looks like a pencil) on a pin.

For the Pinterest app, tap the three dots at the bottom of a pin.

Tap Edit Pin, then Choose section. You’ll see a list of the sections you’ve created for that board. Tap the section you’d like to add the pin to, then click or tap Done.

What Else You Need to Know about Pinterest Board Sections

If you use a third-party service to pin, you may or may not see sections available for your pins.

Boards with thousands of pins may not be the best candidates for organizing pins into sections. Even though creating sections takes just a few steps, moving thousands of pins may take too much time for organizing to be worthwhile. If you think a large board would benefit from sections, you could add sections for future pins, without bothering to organize existing pins into sections.

If you want to create sections for a group board, you could try adding some to see if members of the group use the sections efficiently.

As mentioned above, you can delete a section from a Pinterest board. But by deleting that section you will be deleting the pins in that section. That may be an easy way to clear out a board. Or may result in you deleting some pins you wish you had kept. Choose carefully which sections you delete.

I haven’t created sections on my board yet but will have to play around with it. Thanks for the training. I just got access to the beta stories option and haven’t messed with it yet. I bet people with OCD will love the new sections function.
