Hi Carolyn. I’m sticking with my iPhone 4 for now. I downloaded the new software yesterday – a bit of an ordeal, I must say. My phone crashed in the process and I had to restore! But all is good (and in the midst of the Blackberry madness, I shouldn’t complain!). I can’t wait to hear the reviews of the 4S.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Ruth, Yes, the update to iOS 5 is quite an ordeal! Restoring is part of the process, so your phone may not have crashed at all. The process makes it appear to crash. The whole phone is wiped as part of the update. It actually is a bit scary, but then the restore process starts and all is good. That’s why backing up the phone before you start the update is so important!
Please let us know how you like the new features, Ruth, after you have had a chance to use them. ๐

You know my answer for now Carolyn… Have done a little research but not enough. For now, I’m sticking with what I have. It works just fine for me.

Hi Adrienne, why spend money on something you neither need nor want? Stick with what works for you. ๐

This summer my contract renews so I’ll be waiting. Now that the Marvel app has come to Android I’m still stuck between a rock and a hard place on whether I’ll switch to an iPhone.
Android keeps getting better and better so it’s hard to leave a good thing. Still, I’ve never had an iPhone, my wife recently was gifted an iPad2 so I’m starting to enjoy both systems. Awww!
Come next summer, expect some heavy advice seeking form me Carolyn.

Hi Bryce, I understand you dilemma. Having both an iPhone and an Android phone, I enjoy features from both phones. Sometimes there is a killer app that is unique to one operating system that makes the decision for you!
I look forward to hearing from you about your decision making process next summer, Bryce! ๐

My brand new 4S arrived an hour ago – it’s now waiting online to be activated. If a million people ordered one last Friday and now a million people want to activate them, I understand the delay. Like childbirth (as if I’d know what that’s like ๐ I’ll soon forget the pain and enjoy the results. I had a 3GS and the contract is up and I couldn’t wait to get the new camera. Dying to try Siri. I’ve had the beta app installed since it came out and the results were “mixed”.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Gary, I’m jealous, the UPS driver can’t seem to locate my house! I’m also upgrading from a 3GS that I got in England, so the improvements should be very impressive.
Thanks for letting us know that activation is challenging. Which carrier are you using? I hope everyone is done with their activations by the time I get my iPhone! ๐

I’m waiting for it to arrive in Norway, but if I had the iPhone 4, I probably wouldn’t have bought it. But with the old iPhone 3GS, I want it so bad ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jens, I agree, if I had an iPhone 4, upgrading would be a tougher call. But I’m glad I waited and had a 3GS so upgrading was an easier call. I’m setting up my iPhone 4S now. I can’t wait to use Siri! ๐

Yes ma’am; I’m just waiting for my office to pull the trigger…..
My kids will get there’s in two wks after all the hubbub had died down. The one’s they have are functional so it’s not like they are clamoring for one.
I’m ready though; my crackberry is definitely on it’s last legs….
Hope you had a great weekend.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Bill, I hope you let me know when you get your iPhone. I will be very happy for you and willing to help you if you have any questions. But since you have a lot of others in your family who have iPhones, I bet you’ll have plenty of helpers. It’s very easy to navigate, so I bet soon you’ll be posting tips for us! ๐

Carolyn, aloha. Amazing the number of people who are getting new iPhones.
Did you happen to read in the paper that Steve Wozniak was the first in line at the Apple Store near him? It turns out he always buys his new Apple products that way because he enjoys the experience of talking with the others in line. Personally, I would think it would be exciting to find yourself next to him or overhearing his conversations. What do you think?
Though I currently have no plans for the new phone, my “iLife” friend is now thinking seriously of the 4S because of the camera. She is a great photographer–especially food shots. My guess is that if she does get the 4S, she will give me her old 4 since she wants me to “get with the program.”
Carolyn, wishing you a glorious week ahead. Take care, my friend. Aloha. Janet

P.S. CONGRATULATIONS on smashing past 100K! Way to go, Carolyn!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Thanks, Janet. It’s quite a milestone! ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Janet, I can understand your iLife friend wanting the 4S for the camera. The camera is high quality and worth the price of the phone to many people.
If she gives you her iPhone 4, that would be a very generous present. But carefully consider whether you want to spend the money on an iPhone plan. Those plans can be very expensive over what you are paying now. Perhaps before you use it as a phone, you could use it without the phone services, like an iPod Touch. You could get apps and then see if you want the 3G service that would give you internet access to the apps wherever you go. You may discover that you’re just fine without an iPhone, but like having an iPod Touch.
Keep us posted!
Janet says
Carolyn, if she does get the new phone and I get her old one, wouldn’t it be the same if I just took my Blackberry off the plan and put the iPhone on instead? Aloha. Janet
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Great question, Janet. Yes, it should be the same exact expense for the plan. I didn’t realize you had a BlackBerry. I thought you had a non-smartphone. My mistake, thank you for correcting me.
My only concern then would be that you and she share the same carrier. Her phone is probably locked to her carrier so you would need to make sure you and she were both on Verizon or AT&T.
Janet says
The “problem” is that my phone is not as “smart” as hers because mine is primarily for phone calls! Can you imagine anything more ridiculous?
We do both have AT&T.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Using a smartphone to make phone calls? Practically unheard of!
That’s great you are both on AT&T so you could use her old phone. The only possible minor hitch I see to the plan is that the iPhone 4 takes a micro SIM card (the card that connects the phone to the carrier) so you may not be able to just pop the SIM card out of your BlackBerry phone and pop it into your new iPhone 4. But a quick trip to your local AT&T store can solve that issue without delay.

I am fine with my Android Samsung ACE for now but will be looking forward to get iPhone 5 or 6 maybe as it’s too costly here in India..
An iPhone 3G costs approx 19K here and iPhone 4 32K so it’s better to get Android in 32K i can get Samsung S2 or LG Optimus then why opt for iPhone..
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Rohit, I hope the prices of iPhones continues to drop so they become more affordable for all. In the US, the cell phone carriers subsidize the cost of the phones with the plans (which is why the plans are so expensive). So buying an iPhone isn’t very expensive. People sometimes don’t consider the cost of the plans though!

I’m not really one to stand in line for anything (a phone, concert tickets, a Star Wars premiere, etc.). As a matter of fact, if I were to be gifting a smart phone this holiday season, I’d be shopping for it online on Cyber Monday, and NOT lining up at 5AM on Black Friday.
