My phone is about to go kaput. Any recommendations for UK phone/service providers? I’d love an iPhone, but will need it to work in the US–hopefully in the next year or so. Would an iPhone work in both countries?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Kathy, great question. Yes, an iPhone from the UK will work on the AT&T network in the US if you unlock the phone. Unlocking a phone means you can use it with other carriers. One of the great things in the UK is that the carriers unlock the phones for free, unlike US carriers.
The iPhone I use now in the US I got unlocked from O2 in the UK.
You would not be able to use your UK iPhone with Verizon, even unlocked. Verizon’s network is CDMA which is incompatible with phones from most foreign carriers.

Well, I don’t really need an iPhone. Should I?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Excellent point, Gramps. No one needs an iPhone (or an Android or any other smart phone). But an iPhone can be both a useful tool and a fun toy. All of this functionality comes at a price, though, so you should weigh the usefulness of the iPhone with the cost of both the phone and the plan.
