In Ringtones: Whoโs Calling?, The Wonder of Tech discussed how anyone with a cell phone can use ringtones as a handy way to identify callers. The Wonder of Tech wonders if you use ringtones on your cell phone. Vote in the poll and let us know!
***********************************************
Here’s a photo of the first telephone to use ringtones, Martioli’s Telephonium. Apparently it wasn’t a big hit because people found the three different Bavarian themed ringtones quite annoying.
Which ringtones do you use? Have you ever created a ringtone? Any embarrassing ringtone stories you care to share with us? Let us know in the Comment section below!

My ringtone is Operation Ground and Pound by Dragonforce

Mostly I picked something that was loud enough to be heard though my pocket.

Hi Matt, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! Wow, I listened to the song on YouTube. That sounds like a great ringtone, it will catch your attention and you won’t get tired of listening to it.
Here is my default ringtone:

It definitely gets my attention though every so often I will hear the song and think that my phone is ringing. ๐
Thanks for your visit and sharing your ringtone with us!

Embarrassment?
Pat says
Ringtones have become a great prop in comedy film & tv. The most awkward ringtone song at an inappropriate time, overheard by the wrong person… It can be hilarious! Two and a Half Men did a classic bit with ringtone.
And yes, it can happen to all of us!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Pat, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! I just watched that segment from Two and a Half Men on YouTube. That’s a riot! The scene is a great reminder to choose your ringtone very carefully because you never know who will be hearing it.
Thanks for your visit and your comment!

Hi Gramps, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! Absolutely. Ringtones can be the source of intense embarrassment. Check out the stories in the post Ringtones: Whoโs Calling? for some examples of how ringtones can be embarrassing!

Ow, yes. Ringtones can be a source of embarrassment. Just check Obama’s video in the other post. ๐ I wonder whether the person did associate the duck ringtone with the one calling or not… ๐ I hope not!
Ringtones have always been a source of embarrassment to me. I sometimes fail to take your advice and choose them wisely. I tend to choose the ones I like, which is a mistake. That’s why I try to keep things simple.

Hi Mouh, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! Yes, it can be very tempting to use funny ringtones such as a duck quacking or a funny song but it’s risky. Maybe your choice will never come back to haunt you, but there is always that chance…
Thanks so much, Mouh, for your visit and comment!

I’m always late to the party : ) No custom ringtones here yet…it takes me longer to jump on the tech bandwagon than most people. Lots longer!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Joyce, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! You’re not late to the party, you’re right on time! I just checked the poll results and only about half of the voters use custom ringtones. If everyone were using custom ringtones already, that would be a pretty boring topic, kind of like a poll: do you use a cell phone?
It’s easy to get started with custom ringtones if you want to give it a go. I just added a ringtone of the All My Children theme music for one of my best friends who is an All My Children fan (just like me!).

Please give us some advice on how to add good ones cheaply.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Lee, Welcome back to The Wonder of Tech! Make sure you check out Ringtones: Whoโs Calling? to see the different ways to get ringtones. Several sites were linked on that post to guide you to getting ringtones on your cell phone.
I would start with the Zedge website because they have a lot of free ringtones for many different models of phones. They also guide you step by step on how to get a ringtone on your specific phone.
If you have a question about how to get a ringtone on your specific phone, please email me and I will be happy to help you. The instructions are different for specific phones, so it’s difficult to cover all the different models in this post.

Thanks. I go looking there for ringtones.

Hi Carolyn!
I used ring tones for a while when I got my first blackberry, but then I sort of lost interest. When I’m confronted with too many choices, I tend to spend WAY too much time deciding so I just decided to stop fiddling around with them. ๐
And I’m definitely not interested enough in having a distinct tone to actually pay for premium ones.
I’m always fascinated (read: baffled) by people who download tons of tunes on their phone and change their ringers every week.
For me, I’d rather I put in a CD or turn on the radio if I felt like listening to music. ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Tisha, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! I agree, it makes sense to set your ringtones and live with them for a while. If you change them every week you will surely forget whose ringtone is whose and maybe even forget that you set the song as a ringtone!
I’m of a different opinion, though, when it comes to buying ringtones. Sometimes it’s just easier to buy a ringtone than make your own. If the beginning of the song is what I want on a ringtone, then I might be lazy and spend $1.29 to buy the ringtone on iTunes. I did that this week on iTunes to buy the theme song to a tv show as a ringtone. Ringtones are a big help to me in helping me to know who is calling. But I don’t want to think too much, so I will invest in a ringtone as a helpful reminder instead of using random songs I like.
I can understand your point, though that you don’t want to spend too much time messing around with ringtones. And I completely agree, listening to music is better than listening to a ringtone, unless it’s a call that you’re really excited about… ๐
I have about 20 ringtones, half I created and half I purchased.
Thanks for your visit and your fascinating comment!
Jens P. Berget says
Hey Carolyn,
I am still using the default ringtone for my iPhone, but I have recently started to think about changing it. But, I don’t want a song or music. I just want a better sound, and a sound, like a regular ringtone that not too many people are already using (I want to be able to understand if it’s my phone that is actually ringing).
Jens
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jens, The iPhone comes with 25 standard ringtones, you don’t need to buy or create ringtones to change your ringtone to something different. Go to Settings => Sounds => Ringtone and choose one of the 25 standard ringtones to be your default ringtone. To change ringtones for a specific person, go to Contacts, find the listing for the person, press Edit and go to Ringtone.
Just be careful not to choose the Duck ringtone if you are headed to a meeting with Barack Obama!
