As some of you may have heard, Tuesday, October 4 is the BIG day! That’s when Apple is scheduled to introduce its new iPhone 5, the first new iPhone model in over 15 months. Rumors have been more plentiful than US Presidential candidates as people speculate which features the new iPhone will have.
Instead of speculating, tell us your wish list. What features are important to you? Which features would you like to see on the iPhone 5?
- Do you want a better camera?
- Do you want NFC technology so you can use Google Wallet?
- Do you want the phone to be a global phone (CDMA and GSM) so it can work on Verizon/Sprint and AT&T?
- Do you want it to be sold unlocked so you can use it with any carrier?
- Do you want to be able to use it on a faster network (4G/LTE)?
- Do you want it to hold twice as much content? (64GB)
Vote in the poll below and let us know what you think. You can vote for as many features as you would like to see on the iPhone 5!
Note: Thinner and lighter are not options in the poll because those are going to happen. Thicker and heavier are not what Apple does. No way. No how.
Now that you’ve voted for your favorite features, what features do you think the iPhone 5 will actually have? Let us know in the Comments section below!
Jens P. Berget says
Hi Carolyn,
I’m actually not sure what I want the new iPhone to be. It really doesn’t matter, because it will be a lot better than my old one (the 3GS). I want a better camera though, and fairly large screen, slim design and fast Internet speed. I think that’s what I’ll enjoy the most with a new iPhone. Oh, I almost forgot. It would be awesome if the price is not any higher than the iPhone 4 (it probably won’t be lower, but it would be awesome if the could keep it on the same level).

Hi Jens, I agree with you. I have a 3GS also and I’m sure that the iPhone 5 will have loads of great features I will enjoy. You’re right the price probably won’t be higher, but I wouldn’t rule out a price drop either. stay tuned to The Wonder of Tech for news about the announcement next week! ๐
Gary Braley says
Hi Carolyn,
I want to run Keynote on the iPhone (old 3GS will not do this). I think processor speedup will make the user experience much better. I have over 400 apps and do a lot of experimenting and demonstrating so speed will really help. I’m not sure many people will benefit in the near term from 4G networks. And at those speeds you’ll burn through your monthly dataplan in about twenty minutes ๐
Great question and great blog.
Gary
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Gary, Great point! Who cares if your download speeds are 25MB per second if your data cap is 250 Mb per month? That could prove to be a very expensive data plan! 4G coverage isn’t very widespread in the US, so Apple may very well decided to wait until the iPhone 6 to upgrade to 4G.
Rumors are that the processor on the iPhone 5 is twice the speed of the iPad and iPhone 4, but we will learn more on Tuesday!
Thanks, Gary, for stopping by and for your kind comment!

Hi Carolyn,
In the UK they need to be cheaper and cheaper to use. I would like to see a smart phone that connects to my home network and interacts with television. They could even connect to laptop computers and audio systems. I think they do connect to my laptop using bluetooth. I looked at writing apps, it’s complicated. I was asked for advice by someone 79 years old about setting up a website by email. I thought perhaps it might be too complex at her age; she used to program CPU’s in machine code! lol
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Mike, that’s very kind of you to help out your friend. I bet she’s not too old for running a website, it’s great she wants to give it a go!
Cheaper phones and plans would be great! Although writing apps is complex, you may find you enjoy the challenge. Keep us posted! ๐
Bryce Christiansen says
One thing it will probably never let you do is run Flash. I guess as long as the battery life is good and the processor is fast enough I can always get around it using Splashtop.
What do you tend to do if you want to access flash apps or websites using an iPhone or iPad?
Bryce
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Bryce, You’re right, I can’t imagine that Apple will ever enable Flash to run on iOS. I don’t use Flash apps (I’m #TeamPure, not jailbroken), but I use my Opera browser app when I want to access websites that use Flash on my iPhone or iPad.

Carolyn,
I’ll keep my iPhone 4 for a while. It does everything I need it to do and more. I am contemplating an iPad or MacBook Air. Decisions. Decisions.
I found you by way of Jens Berget, and am sure glad I did. His post on the Kindle brought me here. I’ve seen you commenting over at Bill D’s blog, but never had the chance to get over here.
Just subscribed.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Craig, welcome to The Wonder of Tech! Great idea to keep your iPhone 4 and buy an iPad or MacBook Air instead. No need to upgrade your phone if you continue to be pleased with it. I skipped the iPhone 4 for that very reason.
So glad you found The Wonder of Tech through Jens and that you have subscribed! Thank you so much for your visit and awesome comment! ๐
Craig McBreen says
Glad I found you too! Great site. I’ll let you know who gets my money ๐
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Yes, Craig. Please keep us posted! ๐
Lessa says
In reaction to your comment about thinner phones (and apple not doing bulky) it really got me thinking. To start with phones were huge then all the rage was the make them look nicer, smaller and cooler – they became much smaller. From here new features were added and they bulked up again.
I wonder where they will average out…..?
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Lessa, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech! You’re right, the rage used to be making cell phones smaller. But then when smartphones were introduced, smaller was no longer better. While the iPhone 5 may be thinner and lighter than any previous iPhone, the new device may very well have a larger screen by eliminating the side bezel. I never thought of the iPhone screen as small until I got an iPad. Now with the Kindle Fire having a 7″ screen, people will have all sorts of choices for screen size. Easy on the eyes vs. more portable will be the trade off.
Thanks for your visit and awesome comment, Lessa! We hope to see you back here soon at The Wonder of Tech. ๐
Janet says
Carolyn, aloha. Have to confess I didn’t participate in the poll as I have no frame of reference.
However, I want the phone to be easy, easy, easy to figure out and use. Also, a good size screen with crystal clear images, superb receptivity and connectivity are also on my list.
Have to get into this whole iLife concept otherwise I keep thinking of it as a phone used to make telephones. How weird is that?
Look forward to your review next week on the NEW iPhone.
Best wishes for a terrific rest of the weekend. Until next time, aloha. Janet
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Janet, no need to worry. You can still view the results, even if you don’t vote. If you can find a friend with an iPhone, you can try theirs to see if it works for you. I do believe the iPhone is probably the easiest to figure out. I have a lot of friends who are not into tech who love their iPhones. I’m pretty sure I would know if they had difficulty figuring out how to use it..
I have heard of people actually using the iPhone as a telephone, though I’ve never actually witnessed that phenomenon. ๐
Thanks for your visit and wonderful comment, Janet. Always great to have you here at The Wonder of Tech, whether you vote in the poll or not.

I have a feeling that Voice Command will be huge.
It’s another idea/technology that has existed for ages, that Apple will “reinvent” causing it become the next must-have feature on phones (and perhaps all touchscreen devices?).
When you think about it, hitting a button on a touchscreen is fine, but precise typing — with no tactile feedback is — is quite a problem. Especially on small screens.
If voice command can cut down, on say, 50% of your typing, would that not revolutionize the way you interact with your phone? Would that not set a new standard for all other phones to follow?
The Dragon Dictate app works amazing well. Just imagine having the speech-to-text engine actually running on the phone, available anytime the keyboard is present.

Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Bruce, Welcome to The Wonder of Tech. I agree, I struggle with typing on virtual keyboards. I am looking forward to voice commands also. Imagine if you could tell your phone to “change the appointment with Susan on January 12 from 2:30 to 4:00.” How cool would that be?
Android has voice data entry, as does the Swift Key X app on Android. It would be great to have even deeper voice integration with the iPhone 5.
I will definitely remember your comment, Bruce. I agree with you and believe you have seen the future! Thanks for sharing your vision with us. ๐
Jocuri Online says
A better camera would be nice. Also i would really love to see a new, futuristic design. That would be really cool!
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Jocuri, I agree, those two things are very enticing. I agree, I love futuristic designs. I wasn’t a big fan of the boxy look of the iPhone 4, though I know others really liked the design.
Thanks for your visit and comment, Jocuri! ๐
