The estimated reading time for this post is 3 minutes
If you’ve ever been inspired to tweet at an inconvenient time, you may have realized that tweets can easily be ignored if the timing isn’t right. That realization may make you yearn for the day that Twitter adds a scheduling option to post a tweet later, at a time other than “immediately.”
Good news, that day has arrived!
Twitter has added a scheduling feature so you can draft a tweet, then schedule it to post at a later date and time. No need to post a tweet in the middle of the night, when your followers might miss being inspired by your brilliant thoughts. No more saving a draft to post later, then forgetting about the draft until after it was too late to post.
Now you can draft a tweet and schedule the specific time and day when you want it to post. You can schedule it at a time of day when you think most of your followers will see it, or when it may be best to post for maximum engagement. You can post tweets on the day of the week when your followers are most active.

Perhaps you’re tweeting about an upcoming event or about a topic that’s timely. Schedule your tweet to be published at the best time and date to make the most of your post.
Twitter recently announced this new feature in a tweet, complete with a video explaining how to schedule tweets to publish later:
Not quite ready to send that Tweet? Now on https://t.co/fuPJa36kt0 you can save it as a draft or schedule it to send at a specific time –– all from the Tweet composer! pic.twitter.com/d89ESgVZal

How to Schedule Your Tweet to Post Later
To schedule a tweet to post later, go to the Twitter website and start composing a tweet, answering Twitter’s eternal question of “What’s happening?” When you’re satisfied with your tweet, click the calendar icon in the bottom menu bar.
A new window will open, offering options to schedule your tweet. Choose the date and time from the drop-down menus to let Twitter know when you want your tweet to post, then tap Confirm.
Your tweet will publish on the date and time you’ve selected.
Reviewing Your Scheduled Tweets
If you have tweets scheduled for the future, you may want to review them. Circumstances may change or news may break that makes you re-think one or more of your scheduled tweets.
No worries, you can review your upcoming tweets to see what you have scheduled to post and when. Reviewing your scheduled tweets to make sure they’re timely is probably a wise idea.
To see what tweets you’ve scheduled and when you’ve scheduled them to post, go to the Twitter website, and in the space where you’d compose a tweet, click the calendar icon as if you’re scheduling a tweet.
When the scheduling options window appears, you’ll see a link for Scheduled Tweets at the bottom of the window.
Click Scheduled Tweets to see upcoming tweets that will post to your Timeline, as well as drafts of tweets you’ve composed.
Availability of Scheduling Tweets
For now, scheduling tweets to post later is only available on Twitter’s website, not on the Twitter app. Expanding this feature to the Twitter app would probably be well received by Twitter users around the world. But for now, we must satisfy ourselves with scheduling our tweets on Twitter’s website, or use other scheduling tools such as Buffer, HootSuite, or TweetDeck.

Twitter is rolling out this scheduling feature. If you don’t see the calendar icon on the Twitter website when you’re drafting a tweet, then you don’t have the ability to schedule your tweets quite yet.

I have been waiting for this feature for many years. I have tried using Buffer and Oneupapp, but I think the Twitter solution will best suit my needs and pocket. Do you know if there is a limit to the number of posts that one can schedule? Thanks for the update.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Churchill, I’m glad you’re excited about this new Twitter scheduling feature too. Scheduling tweets to post later will be much easier and I do hope this feature comes to the app so it’s even more convenient.
I haven’t seen reported, nor tested the limit on the maximum number of tweets you can schedule. If you bump up against the limit, please do come back and let us know what that limit is!
Thomas says
Hi Carolyn
That is great news I guess. I have been using Buffer for years to handle this task, but nice that it is now possible directly on Twitter. I wonder why they have not made this possible until now.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Thomas, Yes, this is very exciting news. Scheduling seems like a simple function but perhaps it uses more resources than we expect.
I guess better late than never with this new feature!
Newton Onukwusi says
Thats great news, but i havent seen that feature on my twitter just yet even though i have updated the twitter app.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Newton, I’ glad you’re excited about this new scheduling feature for Twitter, but it is only available on Twitter’s website, not the Twitter app.

Patrick says
I think this will be very beneficial to me and had not considered it before. I get a lot of traffic from the USA and coming from down under (Australia) and twitter tends to get me more traffic early in the mornings (my time)
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Patrick, Excellent point, if you are in a different time zone than most of your Twitter followers, then scheduling your tweets is essential. This free, handy tool right on the Twitter website can be a big help. I hope it works well for you, Patrick.
Susanna Gebauer says
I am usually scheduling most of my tweets that are not direct replies to other peoples’ tweets – but I have always used scheduling tools to do it. But I have used the scheduling feature on Facebook for ages and this new Twitter feature seems to work in a similar way.
It is nice to be able to do more posting and scheduling directly ON Twitter. I am sure that this new feature will also increase engagement as more people will do some scheduling on Twitter instead of posting from tools. At least for me that makes engaging a lot easier.
Susanna
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Susanna, You’re right, by adding a scheduling feature to its website, Twitter is encouraging more people to use its website instead of using third-party tools. This can help increase engagement and interaction by bringing people to its site directly.
Now let’s hope that Twitter brings scheduling to its app!
Ankit Sharma says

Oh, this IS good news! I have been stressing about staying on top of my work load (new to the world of social media marketing and sharing). What a relief! Thank you so much, Carolyn. Especially for the step-by-step run through.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Iris, Yes, this scheduling feature from Twitter can make your workload much more manageable. I’m so glad you found this article helpful, Iris. Thanks for taking to time to share your thoughts with us.
Matt says
Hi Carolyn,
It’s about time that Twitter introduced something like this. I have been using the free versions of Buffer and TweetDeck, for quite a while mainly due to lack of alternatives.
The other good thing about bringing this feature in-house is that there is potential for future updates that the alternatives may not be able to replicate.
Anyways, thanks for alerting us to the new features!
Matt
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Matt, Excellent point. By Twitter offering this feature on its website, then users can automatically take advantage of new features updates may bring, without having to worry if they have the latest version of a third-party app. I hope you enjoy using this new Twitter feature, Matt.
