4 of the Best Smartphone Damage Horror Stories

The estimated reading time for this post is 4 minutes

Most of us have heard horror stories about people damaging their smartphones. But there are some truly horrifying stories about people who damaged their smartphones in unusual ways.

The Wonder of Tech is delighted to welcome Ben George who shares with us some horrific stories of smartphones that were destroyed in most unusual ways.

There are some very casual ways to damage your smartphone. Be it dropping it on the concrete as you get out of the car, or accidentally spilling an entire mug of tea over it, we’ve all either done, or come close to doing, something that could do irreparable damage to our devices.

But there are some very strange – dare we say horrific – stories out there of people breaking their favorite gadgets in unique ways, leaving us wondering if they’re just deeply unlucky, or perhaps burdened by some tech-hating curse – it’s a mystery!

Given that Halloween is just around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to explore some of the strangest ways that people’s smartphones have been damaged or broken, so if you’re out trick-or-treating, you’ll know what to avoid.

Phone Damage Horror Stories

Even after you’ve finished eating your Halloween candy, you may be haunted by these stories of destruction!

The Cujo Moment

Dogs are supposed to be mankind’s best friends, but it’s unlikely that Nero, a Doberman-Great Dane cross, was getting any pats on the head after he decided to eat his owner’s phone. He didn’t have to be feral and rabies-infested like Stephen King’s famous pooch to strike fear into the heart of his owner – Nero just needed to snatch the device and swallow it in one.

Not only would it be horrifying enough to watch your pet choke down your expensive smartphone, but the mad rush to the vet afterwards, and the life-saving surgery, would certainly be enough to spook anyone.

Toilet Accident

Dropping your phone in water is not recommended, for obvious reasons. While most modern devices claim to be water-resistant to a degree, there’s no guarantee that they’ll survive even the slightest of dunks.

But one watery place you definitely shouldn’t be dropping your phone is in the toilet, and according to research, this is something that’s happened to 19% of the population.

Dropping Phone in the Toilet

Not only is dropping your smartphone in the toilet a miraculous feat all by itself, it can also turn into a horror show pretty quickly.

One story that’s emerged from this all-too-common accident is when a phone got stuck in the U-bend of the toilet, blocking the entire system. Eight hours and one call to the plumber later, the blockage was removed, but sadly the phone, as you might expect, was done for.

Let this be a warning to anyone planning on taking their phone to the loo with them – no matter how important the tweet is, it’s not worth destroying your plumbing or your phone for.

From Beyond the Grave

The last thing you’d expect at a funeral is to feel even more grief and anguish, but that’s exactly what happened to one unsuspecting attendee when they somehow managed to break their smartphone. According to the owner, whilst carrying the casket, the corner of the coffin fell on and smashed their smartphone screen, rendering it useless.

It’s unclear whether the recently-deceased was a lover or hater of technology, but they certainly got some posthumous payback on a mourner for bringing their device to the funeral.

Acid Attack

Scientist ChemicalsIf there’s one type of person you’d wager wouldn’t be clumsy enough to damage their smartphone, it’d probably be a scientist. As women and men of reason, they’re expected to take all precautions in the lab to ensure that nothing goes wrong.

Unfortunately, one poor soul didn’t get the memo. While working with dangerous sulphuric acid during an experiment, a smartphone owner managed to pour several-hundred milliliters of the substance over their device.

Like a scene out of a horror movie, the phone began to smoke and fizz, the acid melting through the very delicate components. As you can imagine, the whole phone was fried – literally.

Summary

Breaking your smartphone is never fun, but hopefully these horror stories prove that it can happen in any number of circumstances. So it’s important to stay vigilant and make sure that your smartphone is protected at all times, wherever you are, because you never know when the worst could happen.
