Spotify Launches an AI DJ for a More Personalized Music Experience

The estimated reading time for this post is 3 minutes

If you’ve ever dreamed of a personalized radio station, with a DJ who plays songs for your musical tastes, well, your dreams have come true. Last week, Spotify launched an AI DJ feature that lets people listen to their favorite music and discover new favorites.

About Spotify’s New AI DJ

AI (artificial intelligence) has been in the news lately as companies begin to use it for a new way to offer search services. Spotify is now using AI to give listeners a personalized radio station, complete with a DJ.

Spotify’s AI DJ learns from your listening history and curates your favorite songs and genres. Using a realistic voice, the DJ will comment on the songs and artists it plays, as if you have a personal radio station. The DJ will also play new songs it thinks you’ll enjoy, based on your music taste.

In its announcement, Spotify explained:

The DJ is a personalized AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you. This feature, first rolling out in beta, will deliver a curated lineup of music alongside commentary around the tracks and artists we think you’ll like in a stunningly realistic voice.

It will sort through the latest music and look back at some of your old favorites—maybe even resurfacing that song you haven’t listened to for years. It will then review what you might enjoy and deliver a stream of songs picked just for you. And what’s more, it constantly refreshes the lineup based on your feedback.“

The AI DJ’s voice at launch is based on Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan. If the DJ’s voice sounds familiar, that may be because X was a host of Spotify’s personalized morning show, The Get Up. Spotify may add other AI DJ voices in the future.

How to Use Spotify’s AI DJ Feature

To begin using Spotify’s AI DJ:

  • Open the Spotify mobile app for Android or iOS (iPhone/iPad)
  • Tap the Music button at the top of your Home screen
  • Tap Play on the DJ card
  • Start listening to your personalized DJ

The AI DJ experience from Spotify may become your ideal way of listening to music as it interprets your musical preferences and delivers songs you enjoy. But an AI DJ isn’t perfect.

Not feeling the vibe? Even a personalized AI DJ can guess wrong. No worries, just tap the DJ button to move on to the next track.

Not only will you skip over a song you don’t like, but you’ll also be teaching the AI DJ more about your music taste.

Availability

Spotify is rolling out its AI DJ feature, first in English to Premium Spotify users in the U.S. and Canada.

If you’re a Premium Spotify user in the U.S. or Canada and don’t see the DJ card in the Music section on the Spotify mobile app, then the feature hasn’t been rolled out to you yet. Keep checking the app for updates to begin enjoying your personalized Spotify AI DJ.

Your Thoughts

Have you ever dreamed of a personalized DJ who would play your favorite songs? Do you like the idea of an AI DJ who learns your musical tastes and plays songs it thinks you’ll like? Do you have Spotify’s AI DJ yet?

Hi Praveen, Yes, I do think Spotify is hoping this personal AI DJ is a draw for people to sign up for a premium account.
