Does your pup like to party? Does your lizard like to lounge with lullabies? Does your cat like to cuddle to country songs?
Spotify, the streaming music service, has just introduced custom playlists specifically designed for pets. Now your beloved pet can listen to their favorite tunes to relax, energize, and/or comfort them.
Spotify launched playlists for pets after finding that over 70% of pet owners play music for their pets.
You can now create a custom playlist on Spotify to play for your pet at home, in the car, or wherever you go with your pet. Your pet’s playlist can keep him/her company when you’re gone or be the music for your pet’s next party.
Spotify asked over 5000 music-streaming pet owners in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Spain, and Italy about music and their pets. 71% of respondents said they play music for their pets, with most pets preferring classical and soft rock genres.
80% of pet owners believe their pets enjoy music, 69% of pet owners sing to their pets, and 57% of owners dance with their pets, according to the Spotify survey. Spotify also found that about 20% of pet owners name their pets after a music artist or group.
The top musicians who inspire pet names, according to Spotify, are:
- Bob Marley
- Elvis
- Freddie Mercury
- Bowie
- Ozzy
The survey found that most pet owners think music has positive effects on their pets, including:
- Relieving stress
- Making them happier
- Providing companionship
More interesting facts from the Spotify survey:
- 84% of pet owners believe their pet “completes their life”
- 55% think their pet likes the same music as they do
- 55% of pet owners would pick their pet over their partner if forced to choose.

How to Create a Custom Playlist for Your Pet
To create a custom playlist for your pet, go to pets.byspotify.com/ and pick your pet. Choose from:
- dog
- cat
- iguana
- bird
- hamster
(sorry, fish, no playlists for you!)
Let Spotify know more about your pet, such as how energetic or relaxed, shy or friendly, apathetic or curious he/she is.
Add a photo and tell Spotify your pet’s name to create a custom playlist for your pet.
Spotify will then create a personalized playlist for your pet that you can play while you’re there, or to keep him/her company when you’re away.
You can even ask Alexa to play your pet’s Spotify playlist.

After Spotify has created your custom pet playlist, you can share it on social media.
If you (or your pet) don’t seem to like the songs Spotify has selected for your pet playlist, you can start over and try again.
Astro’s Playlist
I created a playlist for Astro, my dog who is a relaxed and friendly type of pup:
Astro seemed to enjoy the playlist and I did too! He sat and listened to the playlist, and even danced to his favorite tune, “Macho Man” by The Village People (with the help of my husband who also enjoyed Astro’s playlist).
Your Thoughts
Do you play music for your pet(s)? What music does your pet like? Did you create a Spotify playlist for your pet? What types of pets do you wish Spotify would add to its pet playlist options?

I haven’t heard of this yet but sounds cute. And if it helps some anxious pets feel better when they’re home alone, well I think that’s great. I love reptiles as much as the next girl, but I was surprised to see iguana as one of the 5 pet choices.

Hi Suchot, Yes, I loved the idea of a playlist for my pup Astro. I hadn’t considered playing music for him before Spotify launched playlists, but now I will try to play more music for him.
Good point, music can help calm down pets, though I don’t have much experience with iguanas as pets. I’m wondering what pet they’ll include next. Snakes maybe?
Nicola says
Wow, I didn’t know about this. Sometimes I have to go out and leave my dog alone and I usually leave the TV on for her, but this sounds even better. Good job Spotify!

Hi Nicola, Yes, we and our pets can be comforted by Spotify’s pet playlists. We can enjoy our pets’ being serenaded by music while we’re away and know that they will be less stressed by our absence.

This is a nice development. A Playlist for pet, am surprised to see Bob Marley top the list and it’s surprising to see the positive effect music has on these animals. 🎶

Hi Emmanuel, Yes, the Spotify research is fascinating. How great that they acted on the research and developed custom playlists for our pets!
Renan says
Incredible this initiative, cool for Spotify to create this Playlist for animals. Congratulations great post.

Hi Renan, Yes, how thoughtful of Spotify to create custom playlists for our pets. Now we don’t have to make playlists ourselves and our pets can enjoy music without much work on our part.

It is nice and cute that they care about our pets. But it seems that this feature is only available for some countries, huh? I did not find this feature in my spotify. Or I did not find it because I use Spotify Lite? xD
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Bintang,
I don’t believe there are either country or subscription restrictions on Spotify’s new Pet Playlists. The company may be rolling them out gradually. Keep checking to get the playlist for your pet!
