When someone is deciding whether to follow you on Twitter they generally check out your profile page. They may read your short description but chances are they’ll be looking at what you tweet. Like the headline of an article, the top tweet on your profile page is the most important tweet they’ll see.
Whether someone is checking you out to follow you on Twitter, become your client, hire you for a job or evaluate your social credibility you want to make that top tweet on your profile the best it can possibly be. The good news is that now you can have control over which tweet is at the top of your profile page.
Pinning a Tweet to Your Profile Page on Twitter
Twitter has been updated to allow you to pin a tweet to the top of your profile page. Pinning a tweet allows you to choose what tweet people will see first when they arrive at your profile page. Your pinned tweet remains as the top tweet on your profile page until you either unpin it or replace it with another pinned tweet.
Featuring a favorite tweet allows you to show your best tweet on Twitter and aligns your followers’ expectations with what they will be seeing from you in the future. No more worrying that an errant tweet might be the first one that people see.
If you’re in the middle of a Twitter chat, you may have tweets that are off topic from what you normally tweet about. If you’re watching a TV show, you may not want your comment about who is getting voted out of the Big Brother House next to be the first one that people see on your profile page. You don’t have to worry about your Mr. Hyde tweets appearing at the top if you want people to see your Dr. Jekyll tweet first.
How to Pin a Tweet
Pinning a tweet to the top of your profile page is extremely simple:
⇒ Go to your profile page on Twitter by clicking on the Me icon at the top of Twitter.
⇒ Look at your tweets and select the tweet you want to pin to the top.
⇒ Click on the three dots at the bottom of the tweet.
⇒ Choose Pin to Your Profile Page
⇒ Twitter will confirm that you want to pin that tweet.
After you’ve confirmed, your pinned tweet will remain at the top of your profile page until you replace it.
Note that you currently cannot pin a tweet using the Twitter mobile app.
Picking a Tweet to Pin
You can pick your favorite tweet to pin to the top. Consider the message you want to send to people who will be checking out your profile. Choose a tweet with an engaging photo to get that tweet noticed.
Pick a tweet highlighting a favorite article and pin that to the top of your profile:

Adrienne says
I haven’t done this yet Carolyn so thanks for the reminder and the “how to”.
I finally got around to changing my profile a few months back but I’m not sure if Twitter went back to the old way or not since it rarely comes up now. I wish they would, I stopped getting followers when they switched over. I think it’s too confusing for people. Luckily for me I use TweetDeck and you can do everything from there but I’m sure those still using Twitter are finding their new layout a little intimidating. So now I have to go and find me something cool to pin.
Thank you for sharing this, you’re the best.
~Adrienne
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Adrienne, Yes, since you mostly use Twitter from TweetDeck you may not have been pinning your tweets to the top of your profile page. But a quick visit to Twitter’s website to pin your tweet can really help you make the most of your profile page.

Ash says
I should probably get myself onto Twitter, when I do I will be sure to use this trick. I find it a little hard to balance promotional content with informational content and finding people on there that actually interact and not just drop links and leave.
Carolyn Nicander Mohr says
Hi Ash, Yes, like any other social media network, you should connect with people on Twitter who view the site the same way you do. If you use it for entertainment, then follow entertaining people. If you use it for news, follow those who tweet informative posts. If you only follow people who share uninteresting tweets, then you won’t make the most of Twitter.
