Whether you’re headed out on a daily commute or planning a road trip, you may want to make your drive more fun. Why not, right?
With Waze, you can make any trip more fun with Retro Mode. Launched recently, Waze’s Retro Mode makes driving nostalgic by taking you back to the decades of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.
Wait, you didn’t have a GPS app during those decades? You weren’t alone, but Waze doesn’t care about that pesky little detail. Instead, Retro Mode will remind you of cars, moods, voices, and music from that time period.
Going Retro Mode with Waze takes just a few taps. Then you’ll be on your way, reminiscing about your past as you head to your future destination.
How to Go Retro Mode with Waze
Ready for fun? Then set Waze to Retro Mode now so you’re ready for your next trip.
To activate your “blast from the past” Retro Mode, open the Waze app and tap My Waze in the bottom menu. Tap Drive with the 80’s in the menu on the next screen to activate your experience.
You’ll see a new screen that says “Drive with the 80s, or 70s. Or 90s! Turn your next trip into a trip down memory lane with old school voices.”
Below that, you’ll see three menu options:
- Moods
- Car
- Voice Directions
Tap Moods to reveal choices of Groovy or Pumped.
Next, tap Car to choose between El Vanarino or Rad Racer.
Finally, tap Voice directions to choose between 70’s DJ or 80’s Aerobics Instructor
When you’ve made all of your choices, tap the Done button.
Have fun playing around with different Retro Mode settings until you find the perfect combination for your next drive!
Waze Retro Music
Waze has teamed up with TuneIn to provide retro music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s without leaving the Waze app. The Waze Blog explains TuneIn Retro Mode on Waze: “Stations include Hit Music 70’s in the UK, 90’s Hits in the US and Canada, and 80’s Alive in France.”
To use this TuneIn Retro Mode feature, you must sync your Audio Player with Waze. The Google Support Page for Waze has helpful information on how to do this. (Google owns Waze.)
Of course, you could always play a retro playlist from your favorite music streaming service or play the 70s, 80s, or 90s stations on SiriusXM instead. Just so long as you’re enjoying music from your favorite decade to match your Retro Mode in Waze.
Availability of Waze Retro Mode
Waze Retro Mode is available now in the Waze app in countries around the world. Languages for Retro Mode include English, French, and Portuguese.
The Waze app is available free:
According to the Waze blog, Retro Mode will only be available for a “Limited Time.” So enjoy it while you can!

Right on!
70’s all the way, baby.
Take me back to the days of extended family road-trips with the Alphabet and I Spy games, AAA maps, roadside diners, and when backseat seatbelts were used as weapons.
Love the idea of adding themed tunes while cruising.
Waze is so cool.
Thanks, Carolyn!

Hi Leigh, I’m glad you’re getting into the retro groove with Waze. Yes, I remember those days when you’d order AAA maps and a TripTik for your upcoming road trip. Those were cool but retro Waze is even cooler! Have fun rocking out to the oldies, Leigh!
